University researchers develop AWARE-2 camera, hope it hits the mainstream in five years

University researchers develop 50 gigapixel camera, hope it hits the mainstream in five yearsGigapixel cameras aren't exactly hot-off-the-presses, but a few wizards at Duke and the University of Arizona may be close to getting that sort of technology into your future point-and-shoot. Reportedly, electrical engineers with gobs of free time and an imagination the size of Coach K's ego have managed to synchronize 98 minuscule cameras -- each with a 14-megapixel sensor -- "grouped around a shared spherical lens". The real kicker here is the hope for the future: these same researchers feel that "within five years, as the electronic components of the cameras become miniaturized and more efficient, the next generation of gigapixel cameras should be available to the general public." The prototype itself measures a whopping 2.5-feet square and 20 inches deep, but only around 3 percent of it is made of optical elements; the vast majority is circuitry needed to calculate the stupefying amount of information captured with such a device.

A friend and I created this a long time back, I copyrighted it, and it'll be a cold day in hell before I let someone steal it and take every ounce of credit for a story that they had nothing to do with creating..

Bebe.
Yeah. Bebe.
Yeah. Its Lalo.

You do not, nor have you ever, nor WILL you ever have permission to use the story Marq, Eddy, and I created.

You've never contributed and didn't even type your own original Character Sheet.
Find another Roleplay to steal because you're not stealing this one.

I've never been so disappointed in you, Cliff.
How would you feel if Marq, Eddy, and I took all of your songs and poems and told everyone that they were ours? You don't just go around stealing people's hard work.
I expected better from you.
And trust me, Marq and Eddy will hear about this.

Excuse me Little Fox. New generation is a real xmen comic. You didnt make that up at all.
It's not a fanfic. It's a Marvel comic. I would know my fav. xmen Noturne is from [Earth-316]=='
You cant go around bashing people about a marvel comic and make false claims. He gave credit to the makers.
Your wrong about this. And I'm not afraid to get the admins involved. Your just bashing him when you stole work from Marvel.

My proof:

I don't care that you're using the name.

----

The New Generation of X-Men is just that: The New Generation of X-Men.

After the passing on of Professor Charles Xavier(year 2011), Logan, Scott, Hank, and Ororo took the reins (Jean was dead by now as well) of the mansion, taking on many students as apprentices and taking in a few other mutants such as Gambit, Marrow, and Nightcrawler as substitutes to help pick up slack, as many more orphaned and rejected kids came to their doorstep, they needed all the help they could get. By now, Dumisa Buddha T'Challa was one of the apprentices taken on, working alongside Marrow and Wolverine, developing his powers further while preparing to be the next Head of the House. Most of the others were around the ages 19-20 and were as well studying to become Professors.

Ororo (Storm) was the first to leave the mansion during the Summer Break of 2012 heading back to Wakanda to be with her husband, T'Challa. After her leaving, Scott was the next to go, moving out to the country side after Rachel was brought from her dimension to our's and refused to return. (Rachel was his and Jean's daughter in another dimension as an alternate reality where Jean lived. Rachel reminded him too much of his dead love and he left). After Scott left, Hank was quick to go, heading back into politics, serving once more as an ambassador between Homo superior (Mutants) and Homo sapien (Humans). After Hank, Kurt left, following Gambit to New Orleans, having struck up a friendship with him and interested in his 'Thieves' Guild'. That left Marrow and Logan to assign the kids to positions.

The *kids* had been working alongside the previous X-Men since their freshmen year, though after the previous X-Men all went their separate ways, Dumisa Buddha T'Challa was placed in charge of the X-Men, re-named the New Generation of X-Men, as well as head of the Professors. Finding that their charges were ready to go, Marrow and Logan left to go their own way, leaving the young 'uns to carry on their legacy.

I'm highly aware of Stan Lee and Jack Kirby's work, as I've been a fan for 14 years.
I'm aware of what X-Men New Generation is. I'm aware that its a creation of Marvel.

However - The content posted for his roleplay is stolen from a fanfiction that is copyrighted that he had nothing to do with creating and Cliff knows it.

The background - Was written by me.
The rules - Marqueecioe Burelius wrote them.
The Character Sheet - Eddy Newman constructed it.
Like I said:
"The Next Generation of X-Men" is a Fanfiction set in Marvel Universe as an alternate reality centering around X-Men and a growing war between homosapien and homosapien superior.

I can provide links to the website created for it, an IMVU group where its stages of Roleplay originated, and provide posts from previous roleplay interactions, AND a list complete with highly detailed Character Sheets.

Why would I fight so hard for something unless I truly poured my heart and soul into its creation - Fanfic or not?

You've already contradicted yourself, anyways Bebe.

How are you going to say "I didn't steal it, this is original and all my idea." And then turn around and say "This whole story is from Marvel and you're just stealing,."

Ik what the heck it is. Ivee been a fan for a long time. AND IM NOT YOUR BEBE! SO DONT CALL ME IT. im not a child.
NOR AM I CLIFF. IM A WHOLE DIFFRENT PERSON. HINCE THE NAME NIGHTMARIC_ANGEL!!!
& Okay then they made the rules and charr sheet.
THE BACKGROUND IS ALL XMEN GENERATION. YOUR A LIAR on that.

I wasn't talking to you.
Kina ignoring you, really. You've got no idea what's going on.

Cliff knows he didn't have anything to do with this fanfic creation. And I've got all the proof in the world to prove it.

All I asked is that he acknowledges that he had nothing to do with background, rule, or CS template. That he give the links where he copy/pasted all of it from and acknowledge the people who actually did put hours of work into this their credit. And instead he lies and claims that its all his own original work.

Fyi:
No need to result to behavior akin to a clich? pre-teen. Its unbecoming.
I haven't once shown hostility and I expect the same courtesy.

User avatar

Excuse me but this isnt hostility. I'm not a preteen and I said it was all marvel based not this Cliff person. Your starting to erk me. Your stealing Marvel comics storyline and saying it's your own and then your acting like a know it all. I'm not a Akin and a cliche please honey I'm a original. I'm 19 and if anyone is acting like a preteen it is you. Your immature and pirating information. Don't act like you know me you don't. Your abusing this poor guy and I'm not one to stand idly by as you basically curse his name. But that's okay cause I'm reporting you anyways. So you can explain to the admins why your abusing the creator of this rp and pirating marvel information not me.

User avatar
Nightmaric_Angel
Member for 0 years

Be my guest.
I've already notified an Admin.

I'm not pirating anything.

There's no X-Men comic with my background history. Why? Because most Marvel comics are set decades earlier and I wrote the history myself.

I never claimed to create the canons or X-Men. Just this fanfic in particular with help.
The entire timeline and set events were of my own doing.

You really shouldn't involve yourself in something where you don't know what's going on.

Anyways - I leave this decision to the Admins. G'night.

New Islamist group emerges in Nigeria, vows to defend all Muslims in Africa

A new Islamist group called Jama'atu Ansarul Musilimina fi Biladin Sudan (Supporters of Islam in the Land of Sudan) has vowed to defend the interests of Islam and Muslims in Africa, according to a videotaped monologue produced by the group's emir, Abu Usamatul Ansar. The video, which was filmed in Arabic, was also translated into English and Hausa, a predominant African language widely spoken in northern Nigeria. The group is probably an offshoot of the radical Jamaatu Ahlil Sunna Wal daa Wati, commonly known as Boko Haram, which is the most violent al Qaeda-linked Islamist organization in Nigeria.

According to Ansar, Jama'atu Ansarul Musilimina fi Biladin Sudan differentiates itself from Boko Haram in three noticeable aspects. First, Ansar does not believe in the killing of innocent non-Muslims, except in "self defense" or if they attack Muslims. "Islam forbids killing of innocent people including non-Muslims. This is our belief and we stand for it," Ansar said in the video. Boko Haram, on the other hand, considers all non-Muslims, and particularly Christians, as enemies who must be killed.

Secondly, Ansar condemned the killing of "innocent security operatives," and said he would not order attacks against them unless they attack him and his loyalists. Boko Haram, by contrast, has attacked police and other security personnel on a number of occasions. Finally, unlike Boko Haram, which focuses much of its efforts against non-Muslims in northern and eastern Nigeria, Ansar has vowed to defend the interests of Islam and Muslims throughout all of Africa.

But the existence of differences between Boko Haram and Jama'atu Ansarul Musilimina fi Biladin Sudan does not obscure the fact that Ansar's group is a dedicated Islamist organization that supports jihad against "any group of religion that attack Islam and Muslims."

Ansar disparaged the Nigerian government for the "massacring of Muslims," and he vowed that such behavior would no longer be tolerated. Ansar demanded that the Nigerian government allow Muslims to freely practice their religion and ensure that "justice was served to the people."

So far, there has been no comment from Boko Haram concerning the creation of Jama'atu Ansarul Musilimina fi Biladin Sudan, or about the identity of its mysterious emir. Similarly, it remains unclear how many followers of Imam Abubakar Shekau and his Boko Haram organization have defected to Ansar's group, and what impact Ansar's declaration will have among Islamists in Nigeria and greater West Africa.

'Push Girls' proves reality can be important TV

Sundance Channel

The women of "Push Girls" from left, Mia Schaikewitz, Angela Rockwood, Auti Angel and Tiphany Adams.

By Courtney Hazlett

When it comes to television docuseries and reality shows, it seems like every culture and microculture has had time in the spotlight. Polygamist families? Check. Gypsies about to marry? Check. Little people working to save pit bulls? Check. Beautiful women in wheelchairs? Now you can check that box too. But put an asterisk next to it, because ?Push Girls,? the new 14-part series about four paralyzed women, isn?t just a voyeuristic glimpse into life with disability, it?s actually important television.

At its simplest level, the show (which premieres Monday on The Sundance Channel) follows the day-to-day lives of four Los Angeles-based women who use wheelchairs. Of the ladies on the show, Mia Schaikewitz is the only one whose paralysis didn?t occur in a single life-changing moment. Hers happened over the course of about half a day when, at the age of 15, a blood clot ruptured in her spine, leaving her paralyzed from the waist down.

Auti Angel was a professional hip-hop dancer touring with LL Cool J when she was in a car accident that snapped her back in half. There?s also Tiphany Adams, who seems every bit the California girl -- tan, blonde and an unabashed flirt. She was a high-school senior when a car she was riding in with two friends was hit head-on in a 130 mph collision. Like Schaikewitz and Angel, Adams is paralyzed from the waist down. She lives in a house with castmate Angela Rockwood, who was working as a model when she was thrown from the back seat of a car in an accident that resulted in a broken neck and severed spinal cord. At the time, Rockwood was given a 3 percent chance of regaining movement and sensations below her neck.?

All four women knew each other before filming, so this is no ?Real World.? However, viewers get to see the world the women live in and watch them navigate relationships, breakups and the search for everything from jobs to just plain happiness. The wheelchairs are the main difference between ?Push Girls? and other like-minded shows, but when you look a little more closely, the show is accomplishing something else: proving that it is possible to set a new standard for reality-type television.

One way ?Push Girls? does this is by immediately tackling the tough questions, the ones people are thinking but might not want to ask: Can you still have sex if you?re in a wheelchair? Can you have a baby? How do you go to the bathroom? Bathe? ?Push Girls? answers all of these within the span of the first two episodes, and does so honestly and respectfully, never relying on coyness or silliness as a buffer for broaching the difficult stuff. The production might need to be given credit for some of this, but it?s the cast that is the driving force in this accomplishment.

?I don?t beat around the bush. I go in, grab the bush and yank it out,? Rockwood told TODAY.com. ?Ever since I?ve been paralyzed, I?ve had this no nonsense, deal with it, throw everything down on the table attitude.?

It?s that attitude that puts ?Push Girls? in a category apart from other unscripted programming, something that Rockwood recognizes.

?I found myself watching ?Real Housewives of New Jersey? for the first time, and I?m sitting there thinking, ?Are you freaking kidding me? Are you joking? What is this about? All they do is fight?? Half the stuff out there isn?t educating or inspiring,? Rockwood said. ?My mentality is you can go out there and write the book that you want to read. There?s a cure for ignorance: It?s awareness. That's what I?m working toward with this show.?

People will definitely become more aware of the plight of these women after watching "Push Girls," but they?re just as likely to see any of the four women experience something fairly universal, wheelchair or not. Instead of highlighting how we?re so different, ?Push Girls? manages to remind us also how much we?re the same.

Rockwood?s marriage fell apart, and she?s stuck with a mortgage to pay. Angel wonders when she might be ready to have a baby. Schaikewitz wonders if she?s settling for a guy who might not be right for her. This is all pretty basic life stuff, just delivered in a slightly surprising way: You can watch and find yourself having something in common with someone whose life could not be more different than yours.

While the wheelchairs are never a character in their own right (another remarkable achievement), they are ever present and amplify whatever story is being told at the moment. As Adams puts it in the premiere episode, ?I have 26-inch rims on the side of my a--. It?s hard not to get attention.? However, the attention these women will get will ultimately be for delivering a message that might be greater than any of their substantial disabilities.

?Realize what your potential is in the very moment. Go within yourself and know what you?re truly capable of doing. Mind over matter. If you focus positively on a goal, you can completely execute that. Tomorrow is not promised,? Rockwood said. ?That?s the message here for me, what I hope to deliver with this show.????

That?s one big message, and ?Push Girls? delivers it, or at least comes admirably close. Better yet, it does so while creating awareness for those who are wheelchair dependent.

Unscripted programming that doesn?t exploit?and puts some good out into the universe? That?s a pretty rare thing. ?Push Girls? is a show fans of television can be proud to watch.

"Push Girls" premieres on Monday, June 4 at 10 p.m. on Sundance channel.

Tips for Embarking on a Career in Technical Writing ...

I was recently invited to give a guest lecture to students at the University of Limerick (UL) in Ireland who are studying technical communication. The university offers a range of part-time and full-time courses in this area both for undergraduate and post-graduate students, including the popular industry-focused M.A. in Technical Communication and E-Learning.

As a former graduate of UL and somebody who was involved in teaching technical communication there, the idea of my lecture was simply to share some insights from my journey thus far with the students. I spoke about some of the jobs and tasks I?d taken on since graduating, the tools I?d worked with, how the transition to Agile development affected me as a writer, what it was like to work as part of a virtual team, and some other bits and pieces. I finished my 2-hour slot by giving the students some tips to consider if they decide to embark on a new career in technical writing.

I thought it might be worthwhile to share some of the tips here as I?ve noticed a number of requests for this type of advice from newbies on technical writing forums and LinkedIn groups.

Have a Good CV and Sample Documents

It seems like the most obvious advice in the world, but you would be amazed at how many people submit applications for technical writing jobs that are poorly written and include typos and grammatical errors. If you can?t do a good job of writing and editing a CV and cover letter, it?s unlikely any employer will trust you with their technical documentation.

You will typically be asked to submit samples of your work and/or take a test to assess your writing and editing skills. At Technically Write IT, we do both. You?ve been warned, so be prepared for this! If you?ve just gone through a university progamme, chances are you?ve spent a lot of time on certain assignments. Pick one you got a good grade in, incorporate any changes recommended by the lecturer who corrected it, and have it ready to submit to potential employers on request.

Understand the Importance of Team

From my experience, graduates have a tendency to focus solely on their own performance. This stands to reason when you consider that university degrees are awarded based on each individual?s grades. Teamwork is not widely recognised within most education systems. A career in technical writing, on the other hand, is based around collaborating and working well with others.

As part of a technical writing team, you may be expected to edit other people?s writing and allow them to edit yours. It?s good to be open to feedback and constructive criticism from the outset. Remember that your peers and mentors are not trying to attack you personally if they suggest changes to your work ? they?re simply trying to improve your writing skills and the consistency and overall quality of the deliverables produced by the team. Even if you work in a company where you are the only technical writer, you?ll have to work closely with developers, designers, engineers, solution managers, translators, sales and marketing people, and others. If you can demonstrate a positive attitude towards teamwork during the recruitment process, you will enjoy considerably more success.

Get Used to Multi-Tasking and Meeting Deadlines

A key trait that employers look for in technical writers is the ability to deliver on time, every time. Technical writers are constantly faced with deadlines and juggling assignments. The deadlines are usually tight, so you need to be organised and structure your workload in such a way that you manage to complete all of your tasks on time. In the case of software development, writers often have to wait until the software has been fully developed to complete the documentation. They only have a very small window after development close however, before the documentation has to be passed over to translation and of course production so that it?s included in the customer shipment along with the software itself. The trick is to start work early and get as much writing done as possible on the different deliverables before development finishes. Try to get into the habit of setting milestones for your college assignments and working on a few of them in parallel to test your ability to meet deadlines. Talk to potential employers about this if you?re called to an interview. It can be difficult but, like most things, with practice it gets easier!

Focus on Tool Features Rather than any Specific Tool

From my perspective, having technical writing skills is far more important than knowing how to work with Author-It, Confluence, Adobe Framemaker, WordPress, or any other tool du jour. No university programme is going to teach you how to work with every tool on the market, and even if it did, new tools are developed all the time so your knowledge would become outdated very quickly. Additionally, a lot of the bigger companies have developed their own proprietary tools, which you can?t learn to work with until they hire you. I?d recommend spending some time researching what functionality the leading tools offer so that you understand how they can help you to do your job. I?ve worked with many tools over the years and find that you can pick them up easily by using the built-in help system or going through tutorials and other training material to find out how to use the features you expect it to have. If you do want to invest time learning to work with one specific tool, I would recommend choosing one that enables structured XML authoring. The advantages of using XML (such as content reuse, single sourcing, and documentation consistency) are covered extensively elsewhere, so I?m not going to go into them here.

Use the Internet and Social Media to Learn About Industry Trends

I?m a relatively new convert to LinkedIn, Twitter, and other forms of social media, having only really started to take an interest from a career perspective just over a year ago. Even in that short amount of time, it?s amazing how many interesting people I?ve connected with who are experts in different areas of technical communication and based in different parts of the world. It?s never too early to start building a network of contacts in the industry and learning from them. I would recommend looking out for some of the highly experienced individuals who share their knowledge openly and free-of-charge through:

Demonstrate a Hunger for Knowledge

As a technical writer you?re constantly expected to learn new things and transfer that knowledge to others. You will typically spend as much time researching new topics and interviewing experts to gather information for a project as you will actually writing. If the idea of continuous learning doesn?t? appeal to you, you may want to consider another career. If on the other hand, you can show a potential employer that you are curious about their products and services and eager to find out all about them, it will go a long way towards convincing them you?re the right person for the job. Never underestimate the power of a positive attitude!

And to finish on a positive note, I thought I?d let you know that if you choose a career as a technical writer, you?re making a great choice! And I?m not the only one who thinks it ? technical writer was ranked 37th best job in a 2012 Careercast 200 tops jobs survey. I hope you found these tips helpful and I wish you the best of luck on your journey!
