A 'Losing' Battle On Childhood Obesity? | Your Health Journal

From Your Health Journal?..?I visit the Metro West Daily News on a regular basis, as it is one of those local papers that frequently has some great health stories. Please visit their web site (link below) to view many great articles, including the one being reviewed here today. Yesterday, I discussed how childhood obesity is declining in some demographics, but not a reason to jump for joy yet, as it is improvements in isolated areas of the United States. In today?s article, it asks a question I brought up yesterday about what caused some areas of the US to have a decline in childhood obesity ? what EXACTLY did those areas do to have success. In the town of Northborough, they have had some success lowing the BMI scores of many students. A child?s BMI (Body Mass Index) is determined by age, gender, height and weight. An age and gender percentile categorizes children?s BMI as underweight, healthy, overweight or obese. This is a town trying to make a difference, and should be commended for their hard work helping children lead healthier lifestyles. To find out more about their success, please visit the Metro West Daily News site to read the complete article. Happy new year everyone!?

From the article?..

National efforts are being made to reduce the prevalence of childhood obesity, but little data is available to guide towns on what works and what doesn?t.

Northborough, however, has become a regional model for fostering healthier generations, and now several cities and towns are following suit in hopes of achieving similar results.

Since its ?Building A Healthier Northborough? initiative began in 2009, there has been a substantial decline in the town?s percentage of overweight and obese youths in grades one, four, seven and 10, according to body-mass-index (BMI) data submitted to the Massachusetts Department of Public Health (DPH).

A child?s BMI is determined by age, gender, height and weight. An age and gender percentile categorizes children?s BMI as underweight, healthy, overweight or obese.

BMI for age percentiles greater than or equal to the 85th percentile but less than the 95th percentile are considered overweight. When a child?s BMI for age percentile is equal to or greater than the 95th percentile, the child is considered obese.

Northborough saw a 20-percent decrease in the percentage of overweight and obese youths in surveyed grades between 2009 and 2011, according to the DPH?s 2011 report of the Status of Childhood Weight in Massachusetts.

Northborough Program Coordinator Tamara Calise, of the JSI Research and Training Institute, said a small work group comprised of members from a number of town departments made it possible to coordinate anti-obesity efforts.

The town planner created bylaws to promote more walking around Northborough and members of Youth and Family Services used their connections with the schools to move recess times and create guidelines that ask teachers not to give out candy as a reward or hold a child out of recess as punishment for bad behavior, Calise said.

Calise has now taken on the role of project coordinator for the MetroWest Moves partnership, which was started earlier this year and includes Framingham, Hudson and Marlborough. The latter two communities have some of the highest percentages of overweight and obese youth in the region.

Police officer among 2 fatally shot in Houston

HOUSTON (AP) ? A traffic stop turned into a fatal shooting on Christmas Eve when a gunman killed a police officer and bystander in the parking lot of a Houston body shop, police said.

The confrontation followed a chase that began shortly before 9 a.m. Monday when the suspect sped off in his car rather than pull over as an officer had requested, Houston police spokesman John Cannon said. As the suspect fled, he sideswiped a white truck, which also took off after him, he said.

The suspect, identified by Cannon as Harlem Harold Lewis, 21, and the white truck eventually pulled into a nearby Maaco body shop, where Bellaire police Cpl. Jimmie Norman approached the vehicle. Cannon said an argument apparently erupted, and the suspect pulled out a .380 caliber handgun and shot Norman.

"The saddest thing is that the officer, who is deceased, didn't have the opportunity to pull his weapon and defend himself," Cannon said. "It happened that fast."

He said a man then walked out of the body shop, and the suspect shot him.

Other officers arrived at the scene and found Norman lying on the ground and the suspect next to him, holding a gun, Cannon said.

"They are immediately fired upon, and those two officers then returned fire," he said.

The suspect was shot but fled on foot, Cannon said. He hid under a parked truck, but officers followed a trail of blood and arrested him.

"This suspect murdered a police officer and murdered an innocent bystander," Cannon said.

He said Lewis was expected to be charged later Monday with capital murder of a police officer and murder for the death of the bystander.

Norman, 53, worked for the Bellaire Police Department for 23 years and was the first of its officers to be shot in the line of duty, Bellaire police spokesman Robert Beran said.

"We're devastated by his loss. We're devastated by what this has done to his family," Bellaire Police Chief Byron Holloway told reporters at a news conference.

The identity of the bystander has not yet been released.

The parking lot of the body shop remained cordoned off with yellow police tape hours after the shootings. Officers milled around, collecting evidence and discussing the incident. The owners of a nearby auto parts store closed up early for Christmas, although other stores in the strip mall remained open as people rushed in for last-minute holiday errands.

Stephanie Pacheco, who works at the auto parts store, said she saw the officer get out of his patrol car in the parking lot next door and approach the driver. The officer opened the suspect's car door and tried to pull him out, she told the Houston Chronicle.

That's when the suspect opened fire, she said. The officer fell down, and the suspect continued firing shots in other directions, Pacheco said.

"This is senseless, ridiculous and needs to stop," Pacheco said. "I'm tired of seeing people die. It's a sad thing."

The bystander was shot at close range and died at the scene, Cannon said. It wasn't clear why the man stepped outside the body shop or whether he was an employee or a customer, he added. Norman was rushed to a hospital and died there.

The suspect was in critical but stable condition at a Houston hospital. Cannon said he is expected to survive.

Houston and Bellaire police and the Harris County District Attorney's office are investigating.

How To Launch And Promote Your Own Business Book

Proposal Secrets Cover WEB How To Launch And Promote Your Own Business Book

The Concept

The original concept for Proposal Development Secrets: Win More, Work Smarter, and Get Home on Time was to determine whether a low-cost e-book aimed at the A/E/C industry would outperform a higher cost book by testing it.

I knew a similar niche business book priced over $20 could reasonably sell one copy per day. I surmised one $20 copy per day could amount to $70 per week. Could you generate more revenue with one priced at $3.99? My hypothesis was you could because the lower price may increase demand enough to outperform the higher-priced book.

I saw it as the classic price elasticity of demand question. How much greater would the demand be at a lower price? As I explained to Mark Buckshon, whose experience with his Construction Marketing Ideas book served as an inspiration, I wanted the book to be an impulse buy. Naturally, he thought I was crazy. But that?s the idea I decided to test.

as markets price elasticity of demand clip image003 How To Launch And Promote Your Own Business Book

So, I had a question I wanted to answer. I formed a hypothesis. Now, I had to put the pieces into place so I could test it.

Defining The Audience

Here?s where we switch back to Mind Marketing. You can?t create a need. Either the need is there or it isn?t. For example, you wouldn?t be very successful at selling snowboards to elderly women. I?m sure there are one or two elderly women that really shred, but there is not enough of a market there to make it worth your while. So, first I had to define a target market that had a need. Therefore, the book was written for a very specific audience: marketing/proposal coordinators in the A/E/C industry. I feel I know how that audience thinks, having first hand experience of being ?one of them? and managing them.

When you think about the thousands of A/E/C firms out there, there are clearly thousands of people who

You?ll also notice that my book starts out explaining whom it is intended for. This was deliberate. It defines, for me and the audience, what this book was to be and who the buyer was.

Giving The Audience What They Want

Like I mentioned, you can?t create a need. The need is already there. So, once you?ve defined the audience you have to figure out what their need is. You are selling the solution to their need/problem/challenge.

Covers sell books. So, it?s very important to create a cover that will make people want the book. The title of the book is an important part of the cover. This is where you say, ?hey, you have a need and the solution is in here.?

I knew the book was going to be about proposals, but I didn?t have a name for it. I decided to focus on what I believe the audience needed. I came up with several titles and tested them with a few people (refer back to the scientific method). The winner was Proposal Development Secrets: Win More, Work Smarter, and Get Home on Time.

I thought early on that the one thing marketing coordinators want more than anything else is simply to ?get home on time.? ?Win more and work smarter? are really ancillary concepts. They are just there so it?s not disgustingly obvious what I?m selling. Just imagine what the boss would say if you were reading a book simply titled: ?Proposal Development: Get Home on Time.? You?d have to read that book in secret.

Choosing The Cover

One of the things I knew about the audience was that it would be predominantly female. Therefore, I needed an image of a female on the cover. I needed the image of someone the audience could see themselves as.

Another aspect of the audience was they would be younger, more junior, marketers.

Since ?get home on time? was the theme, the cover image had to convey this concept. I was lucky enough to find a picture of two young business people lying in the grass. Obviously, they?ve done their work and are now relaxing. I bought the rights to use this photo from iStockphoto.com.

So, the first thing you see on the cover is a woman. Then you see the title.

The Hype

Before I announced the book, I wrote a few posts about an exciting announcement. Even though my audience is not huge (by blogging standards), getting people excited always helps. I was using the knowledge gap to get people curious about the book.

Also, a few bloggers and trusted friends had seen the book before hand and knew it was coming out. And they were more than happy to mention the book as it came out.

Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing

I decided to publish the eBook exclusively through the Amazon Kindle Store because:

  1. It was easier

  2. I got a 70% royalty rate, meaning I got about $2.78 for each book sold.

In addition, publishing the Kindle book cost pretty much nothing but my time. Publishing a paperback will at least set you back a couple hundred bucks (after all is said and done).

The Secret Release

This exclusive arrangement with Amazon also allowed me to give the book away for five days. I opted to give it away for three, letting my subscribers know only after the first day had passed. So, my subscribers had two days to grab the book. Many of them did. Giving your product away to your most likely buyers sounds insane. But this helps in two ways. First, I like to reward my subscribers by getting them exclusive and free stuff (here is the link if you want in). Second, because they received the book as a gift, they were much more likely to reciprocate the favor by posting a review on Amazon. In addition, since they like my writing, it was reasonable to believe they would enjoy the book.

This approach provided the ?social proof? needed to launch the book. Those initial ?sales? convinced others to buy the book in the initial week. This social proof was elevated by several positive reviews the book got from readers who had received a free copy.

After the book went from free to paid, it shot up to the #8 best selling marketing book in the Kindle Store (it later reached #7 with the paperback). This was quite a surprise to me. I was outselling most of the top business authors.

What I learned afterwards is you don?t have to sell a lot of books to outsell top authors. Think about this, let?s compare book sales to CD sales (which we hear on the news is a dying industry). How To Win Friends and Influence People was published in 1936 and has sold 15 million copies. Michael Jackson?s Thriller was released in 1982 and has sold 65 million copies. Ace of Base, Usher, Iron Butterfly, and many others outsell Dale Carnegie by a lot! One of the most popular, if not the most popular, business books of all time sold little more than 100,000 copies a year. Proposal Development Secrets: Win More, Work Smarter, and Get Home on Time sold 3,000 in a year. In addition, Amazon recalculates their top sellers every hour. It also highlights the new books that are ?hot sellers? (i.e. moving up the charts). With the right launch and the right book, getting in Amazon?s top 10 is not an insurmountable task.

The entire first month after the launch, I was selling around four books per day. That?s about $10 per day, roughly equivalent to my baseline of $70 per week.

My Conclusion

I had tested my hypothesis and I thought I had proved a low priced eBook could at least match the performance of a paperback. Boy, was I wrong. But more on that in part 2.

Ask Slashdot: Should Scientists Build a New Particle Collider In Japan?

The ILC is a completely different design, with completely different goals. Previously, about 15 years ago, we had a hadron collider (the Tevatron) and a lepton collider (the LEP). The LEP was used as a basis to build the LHC; so now we have just hadron colliders (DESY is dual, but its energy range is way below the current frontier). A lepton collider gives us a way cleaner signal for weak and electromagnetic interactions, but gives us almost no insight on strong interactions; a hadron collider gives us a totally messy result, which includes a lot of strong interactions and noise-level channels for electroweak. In fact, at the LHC's energies, you see mostly gluon-gluon collisions, not even quark-quark. So, to actually see precisely the Higgs and measure its mass, a lepton collider would be great. A lepton collider would also give a clearer picture of wether there is something beyond the standard model (up to about half its center-of-mass collision energy at least), so al of us theoretical physicists would LOVE to have one.

However, accelerating electrons and positrons in a curved path is very, very, VERY hard. They lose their energy about a million times quicker than protons; so, to get to TeV levels, the collider should be linear. Accelerating stuff in a linear collider is very, very hard (note: "only" two "very"s here) because you need to give it its energy on a shorter space (while a conventional collider would do so over lots of cycles). So, its engineering won't be easy, but we will get a lot of insights on both particle physics and electromagnetism (to accelerate the damn electrons); that electromagnetism expertise could be used, for example, for high speed trains.

We absolutely should build a lepton linear collider. Whether it's in Japan or in the US (putting the Fermilab's infrastructure to good use), it will teach us a lot that the LHC can't.

(AP) ? Adrian Peterson peeked up at the video board at the end of his 82-yard touchdown run and saw St. Louis Rams players trailing far behind him.

And with each fancy high-step to cap it off, the Minnesota Vikings running back moved closer to the NFL rushing record.

Peterson piled up a season-best 212 yards on 24 carries in a 36-22 victory Sunday that wasn't as close as the score indicated. He has a career-best 1,812 yards rushing, leaving him 294 shy of breaking the NFL's single-season mark of 2,105 set by Eric Dickerson of the Los Angeles Rams in 1984.

"Yeah, yeah, I was able to see myself," Peterson said. "I just told myself to stay relaxed and 'You don't have to put on too much juice, but make sure you get there.'"

He remained hot on the trail of Dickerson's record. Peterson, less than a year removed from a serious knee injury, has two games left ? at Houston and home against Green Bay ? to top it.

"Yeah, it's been in my sights," Peterson said. "I'm not focusing on it. It's in the back of my head that, hey I definitely want to accomplish that.

"I look at today's game and I could have had 300."

Slight consolation for the Rams: Without the two long-gainers, Peterson had 78 yards on 22 carries.

"He's very elusive, very elusive," tackle Michael Brockers said. "You've got to get all tacklers to the ball. On some of the big runs, we didn't do that very well."

On Peterson's long touchdown run in the second quarter, he was able to turn what appeared would be a short gain into a big score.

"He continues to amaze you with some of his runs," coach Leslie Frazier said. "It looks like there was nothing there and the next thing you know he's out the door."

The Vikings (8-6) scored 10 of their 23 points in the second quarter off turnovers by Sam Bradford, including a 29-yard interception return by defensive end Everson Griffen, who had dropped into coverage. The Rams quarterback watched in disbelief from his knees.

"Yeah, that's one of those things I've got to be able to see," Bradford said. "He's right there. You can't throw one right to him like that."

They were up by 26 before Bradford, whose botched center snap also cost the Rams (6-7-1) a field goal in the second quarter, threw touchdown passes to Danny Amendola and Lance Kendricks in the fourth quarter.

The Vikings remained in the playoff picture while seriously damaging the Rams' postseason hopes. St. Louis had won three in a row to become a dark horse candidate for the playoffs.

Steven Jackson became the 15th player to rush for 10,000 yards for one team. He had 73 yards on just eight carries and has 909 yards on the year, keeping him in range of an eighth straight 1,000-yard season.

A moment of silence was observed for victims of the Connecticut elementary school shooting before the national anthem, with dozens of children wearing uniform jerseys holding hands with players in a circle extending from the 30-yard lines and centered on the Rams' logo at midfield.

In a tribute to the 26 victims, each team sent the players wearing the No. 26 jersey ? Rams running back Daryl Richardson and Vikings cornerback Antoine Winfield ? and they held hands with coaches Jeff Fisher and Frazier to form a smaller interior circle.

"What went through my mind? I have a son that's in kindergarten," Jackson said. "You drop your kid off at school and he or she wants to go there and learn and better themselves, and to then go to the school and find that your child will no longer be with you, I couldn't imagine that thing."

Peterson topped his previous single-season best of 1,760 yards in 2007 on a 52-yard run in the fourth quarter. On both long runs, Peterson made something out of nothing with nimble cutbacks to daylight.

Christian Ponder had a turnover-free game and ran for the game's first score for the Vikings, who had been just 1-5 on the road with the other victory at Detroit in September. Rookie kicker Blair Walsh was perfect on five field-goal attempts, three of them from 50 yards and beyond.

The Rams stopped Peterson, held to minus-3 yards on five carries, but not Ponder on the Vikings' opening drive. Benefiting from a short field at the St. Louis 45, the quarterback was 3 for 3 for 38 yards plus a 5-yard scramble that put them up 7-0.

Rookie Brian Quick won a jump ball with A.J. Jefferson in the end zone on a 4-yard reception, landing just inbounds to tie it early in the second quarter.

Then, the Vikings took over.

Peterson had eight carries for 8 yards before breaking his 82-yard score on the next play.

"It's all about famine, famine, feast," Peterson said. "We knew it was going to be tough early and our offensive line was dialed into it. We just kept pounding them."

Walsh's 50-yard field goal made the Rams pay for Bradford's botched snap and Griffen's first career interception and return gave Minnesota 17 points in a span of just 3:56.

"He threw it right to me," Griffen said. "It was a dream come true. I want to say 'Thank you, Sam Bradford.'"

Peterson entered the day with more rushing yards than 23 teams, including the Rams, and accounted for more than two thirds of the Vikings' 322 yards. Ponder was a facilitator, going 17 for 24 for 131 yards.

Throw out the costly mistakes and it looks as if Bradford was on his game, going 35 for 55 for 377 yards. Jackson caught eight passes for 73 yards, and Brandon Gibson and Amendola had six receptions each.

NOTES: Griffen stepped up for the Vikings in place of DE Brian Robison (shoulder), injured in the first quarter and ruled out just after halftime. Frazier said Robison has an AC sprain and will undergo an MRI exam on Monday. ... Bradford has been sacked in 30 consecutive games, the longest active streak in the NFL. ... The Vikings' previous best for the first half was 17 points in two games, and four times they were held to single digits. ... The Rams are 5 for 6 on 2-point conversions after Amendola's catch in the fourth quarter.

Alexandria, VA For more than 35 years, scientists from the Antarctic Search for Meteorites (ANSMET) program have been scouring glacial landscapes in search of meteorites. Since 1976, teams of physicists, meteorite specialists, and mountaineers have recovered thousands of untouched specimens from meteoroids, the moon and even Mars. Despite subzero temperatures and razor-sharp winds, scientists are lining up for the chance to experience the ultimate hunt for alien objects in the alien environment.

ANSMET teams either conduct systematic searches of a region or work as a scout teams making preliminary investigations of new sites that might be worth further exploration. Once discovered, the meteorites are carefully cataloged in the field and sent to the Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History in Washington, D.C., where they are distributed to scientists for further research. What secrets will new specimens locked away in the ice and yet to be discovered hold about our solar system and the universe? Read the story online and find out at http://bit.ly/UtXc9R.

Read this story and more in the December issue of EARTH Magazine, available online now. Learn how mummification emerged from environmental change; discover the explosive combination of red giants and white dwarfs; and see what states are paying to dispose of low-level radioactive waste all in this month's issue of EARTH.

Dr. Bela Kudish | Vaginal Rejuvenation Surgery | Orlando Health ...

Cosmetic vulvovaginal surgery creates considerable controversy. As gynecologists, we are commonly asked questions about sex, including lack of interest, pain with intercourse or difficulty with arousal or orgasm. More recently, dissatisfaction with the appearance of external genitalia, labia, or complaints of a ?loose vagina? after vaginal childbirth have spawned interest in newer sexual enhancement procedures. With approximately 43% of US women experiencing some form of sexual dysfunction ? the importance of addressing sexual health has been brought to the forefront of health issues by organizations such as the WHO and has become part of the United States medical school curriculum.

Cosmetic procedures are often lumped in with bona fide reconstructive pelvic surgery operations, such as anti-incontinence and prolapse repairs, muddling the discussion of ?normal? pelvic floor anatomy and dysfunction for many women. To add to the complexity of this issue, cosmetic vulvovaginal surgery is now heavily advertised by private offices and media as a way to improve vaginal appearance or enhance sexual satisfaction. These cosmetic procedures include so-called ?laser vaginal rejuvenation,? ?designer vaginoplasty,? ?revirgination,? ?aesthetic vulvar liposculpturing,? and ?G-spot amplification.? Some of these surgeries are modifications of traditional urogynecologic procedures. Some are done to change the size or shape of labia majora or minora or to restore the hymenal ring.

Vaginal rejuvenation surgery is considered the third fastest-growing procedure in aesthetic plastic surgery. The costs of these procedures range from $3,800 for laser hymenoplasty, $6,800 for laser reduction labioplasty to $8,400 for laser anterior colporrhaphy, posterior colporrhaphy, and perineoplasty. Advocates of vaginal rejuvenation procedures state that they are providing a service for women who have legitimate concerns about the appearance and/or function of their bodies and have the right to seek physical enhancement as with any other body part even in the absence of dysfunction or disfigurement. Opponents of vulvovaginal rejuvenation question the safety, efficacy, the added benefits from a laser, and psychosocial benefit of these procedures in the absence of legitimate outcome data. Many also believe that external vulvar procedures may affect outward appearance of the genitalia but may not serve a functional role.

When a woman presents to the OB-GYN?s office with a request to undergo cosmetic vulvovaginal surgery, a gynecologist should first explore the rationale behind the woman?s desire for this procedure before agreeing to perform surgery. The range of normal appearance of labia minora and majora is quite wide. A gynecologist should educate women about the diverse appearance of external genitalia. Because many women view these surgeries as relatively risk-free and do not expect significant discomfort or problems with the postoperative recovery, it is important for the surgeon to inform the patient fully regarding treatment alternatives and the potential risks of pain, infection, scarring, negative effects on sexuality as well as the purported benefits of the proposed surgical options. Furthermore, patients should be informed that there are no established stringent guidelines in training, surgical techniques, or postoperative monitoring of care after these surgeries.

Idaho Potato Bowl 2012: Utah State Routs Toledo 41-15 With Big Day By Kerwynn Williams (VIDEO)

BOISE, Idaho ? Utah State running back Kerwynn Williams was having a quiet day when things took a turn for the worse in the fourth quarter when he fumbled deep in his own territory.

As it has all season, the Aggies' defense did its job, holding Toledo to a field goal that cut the lead to 13-9 with 7:28 to go. Then Williams atoned for his mistake ? in a big way.

On the next possession, Williams broke through the defense and raced 63 yards for a touchdown. On the next two possessions, the senior was unstoppable, ripping off a 56-yard run and scoring TDs on runs of 5 and 25 yards, all within a span of less than 4 minutes to lift No. 18 Utah State to a 41-15 victory over Toledo in the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl on Saturday.

"When stuff like that happens you have to have a short memory," Williams said about the fumble. "You can't change it. I just knew the next opportunity for me, I needed to make a big play."

Williams' fourth-quarter spree fueled a 28-point Aggies scoring burst that turned a close game into a blowout. Williams finished with a career-best 235 yards rushing on 18 carries, with 182 of those yards coming on six carries in the fourth quarter, and was voted MVP.

Williams' heroics also capped the most successful season in the history of Utah State football. The Aggies finished 11-2, won the Western Athletic Conference title outright and won a bowl game for the first time since 1993. Utah State also will likely finish ranked for the first time since 1961.

"You play in bowls to win championships, and they did that today," said Aggies coach Gary Andersen, who in four years has turned a Western Athletic Conference doormat into the top team of a conference soon to be obsolete. "They (team) reached every single goal they set last January. That doesn't happen often in life or often in football. I'm very, very proud of them."

The Aggies, bolstered all year by one of the best defenses in FBS, rolled up 582 yards total yards on offense.

Quarterback Chuckie Keeton was 21-of-31 passing for 229 yards and 92 yards rushing, including a 62-yard dash that put Utah State up 7-3 in the first quarter.

The defense also turned in another impressive performance. Toledo (9-4) was able to move the ball at times and made five trips inside the red zone. But penalties, miscues and an inability to execute on critical plays forced the Rockets to settle for three Jeremiah Detmer field goals. Detmer hit a pair from 37 yards out and another from 29, closing his season by making 17 straight.

Toledo's only touchdown came when Bernard Reedy returned a fourth-quarter kickoff 87 yards for a touchdown. Reedy was the only big producer on a Toledo offense held to 315 total yards. Reedy had 51 yards rushing and caught six passes for 62 yards.

"When they got down in the red zone, they scored touchdowns. When we got down into the red zone we kicked field goals," first-year Toledo coach Matt Campbell said. "In big football games you have to win details."

Toledo quarterback Austin Dantin, who started in place of the injured Terrence Owens, was 12 of 21 passing for 132 yards. Dantin threw an interception in the third quarter to end a promising scoring drive and was replaced by Owens in the fourth quarter.

Owens moved the Rockets on his first possession, but another red-zone opportunity was squelched when the Aggies snuffed Owens for no gain on a fourth-and-1 play from the 9.

Toledo also was forced to adjust early without two of its best players. Linebacker Dan Molls, the nation's leading tackler, had a concussion on the opening kickoff and didn't return. Minutes later, running back David Fluellen, the nation's eighth-leading rusher, went down with an ankle injury. He finished with 38 yards on seven carries.

Campbell refused to use the injuries to Moll and Fluellen as an excuse and pointed out the game was close until the final 7 1/2 minutes.

"Injuries happen, they occur, you have to have the ability to adapt and you have to have the ability to move on," he said. "We were still in the game in the fourth quarter. I'm really proud of our football team from that standpoint."

USB Cable - A Brief History Of The USB Cable

USB stand for Universal Serial Bus. It is a piece of hardware technology that was developed back in the mid 1990's and it is still used today. The USB cable is the standard today and it is hard to get anything done without one in your life. These cords are designed for multiple applications and you probably use one every day without knowing it. Many of today's smart phones employ a USB cable to power the battery.

The original cords were designed to connect the accessories of a computer. A USB cord would be employed to connect the keyboard on your desk to the computer. They could also connect your mouse, a printer, a pointing device, a network adapter or a disk drive. The cord would facilitate easy communication between the computer and its peripherals. The idea was to have an interchangeable cord for all of these functions. It would make computer hardware easier to manage.

Today, these cords are used for many different modern devices. They are used to connect smart phones, tablets, PDAs and video game consoles. The great thing about a USB cable is that it connects two pieces of electronic hardware and is capable of powering the hardware at the same time. This saves the user from having to use two cables; one for power and the other for connection. You can use a long USB cable in lengths up to 5m.

The world can thank seven different companies for the advent of the cord. These companies include Compaq, DEC, IBM, Intel, Microsoft, NEC and Nortel. The idea was to come up with a way for all their devices to be able to communicate. It helped their businesses. The consumer could buy a piece of hardware from one of these companies and buy another piece of hardware and connect them with a USB cable. It made buying from these seven companies convenient and it drove their sales up.

Not all cords are made the same. Some have different sizes and others have different capabilities. Most of the sizes are displayed right on the connector of the USB cable. It will usually have a letter that tells you what size it is. Most mini cords, usually labelled with a B, are used for smart phones. Some cords can carry more information. The wire's information capability is not usually found on the cord itself. You will have to examine the cable's packaging for that information and it is usually listed as a number; higher is better.

Mail call for Indiana Jones at Univ. of Chicago

Paramount

By Peter Gicas, E! Online

Indiana Jones, you've got mail. Wait, what?! Well, that certainly seems to be the case given how the admissions department at the University of Chicago received a package earlier this week addressed to Henry Walton Jones, Jr. aka our beloved hero from "Raiders of the Lost Ark."

Of course, as fans of the film franchise know, the fictional fedora-wearing archaeologist played by Harrison Ford was also a professor at the school.

Who should play Han Solo in the next "Star Wars" movie?

According to the university's official Tumblr, the manila envelope contained "an incredibly detailed replica" of a journal belonging to Abner Ravenwood, Indiana's mentor and father of his love interest, Marion Ravenwood.

The package also included "weathered inserts and many postcards/pictures of Marion Ravenwood (and some cool old replica money)" and "it's clear that it is mostly, but not completely handmade, as although the included paper is weathered all of the 'handwriting' and calligraphy lacks the telltale pressure marks of actual handwriting."

And while the package did not have real stamps on it, but rather vintage ones that looked to have been photocopied, it still wound up in the mail, which suggests that it was most likely planted internally.

The university, while baffled but nevertheless impressed by such an elaborate joke, is curious to find out who is behind it.

"If you're an applicant and sent this to us: Why? How? Did you make it? Why so awesome," posted the admissions office along with an email address. "Any hints, ideas thoughts, or explanations are appreciated."

Obama: Marijuana not high priority, 'bigger fish to fry'

President Obama says recreational users of marijuana in states that have legalized the substance should not be a "top priority" of federal law enforcement officials prosecuting the war on drugs.

"We've got bigger fish to fry," Obama said of pot users in Colorado and Washington during an exclusive interview with ABC News' Barbara Walters.

"It would not make sense for us to see a top priority as going after recreational users in states that have determined that it's legal," he said, invoking the same approach taken toward users of medicinal marijuana in 18 states where it's legal.

More of Barbara Walters' exclusive first joint, post-election interview with President Obama and first lady Michelle Obama airs tonight on "20/20" at 10 p.m. ET on ABC stations.

Obama's comments on marijuana are his first following Colorado and Washington voters' approval of Nov. 7 ballot measures that legalize the recreational use and sale of pot in defiance of federal law.

Marijuana, or cannabis, remains classified under the Controlled Substances Act as a Schedule I narcotic whose cultivation, distribution, possession and use are criminal acts. It's in the same category as heroin, LSD and "Ecstasy," all deemed to have high potential for abuse.

Obama told Walters he does not ? "at this point" ? support widespread legalization of marijuana. But he cited shifting public opinion and limited government resources as reasons to find a middle ground on punishing use of the drug.

"This is a tough problem, because Congress has not yet changed the law," Obama said. "I head up the executive branch; we're supposed to be carrying out laws. And so what we're going to need to have is a conversation about, How do you reconcile a federal law that still says marijuana is a federal offense and state laws that say that it's legal?"

The president said he has asked Attorney General Eric Holder and the Justice Department to examine the legal questions surrounding conflicting state and federal laws on drugs.

"There are a number of issues that have to be considered, among them the impact that drug usage has on young people, [and] we have treaty obligations with nations outside the United States," Holder said Wednesday of the review underway.

As a politician, Obama has always opposed legalizing marijuana and downplayed his personal history with the substance.

Obama wrote in his 1995 memoir, "Dreams from My Father," that he would smoke pot regularly with his high school buddies who formed a "club of disaffection." The group was known as the "Choom Gang," says Obama biographer David Maraniss.

"There are a bunch of things I did that I regret when I was a kid," Obama told Walters. "My attitude is, substance abuse generally is not good for our kids, not good for our society.

"I want to discourage drug use," he added.

While the administration has not prioritized prosecutions of marijuana users and small-scale distributors in states where it's legal, it has not ceased prosecutions altogether. The Justice Department has continued raids on pot providers ? including in states where they are legal ? in an approach that experts say is more aggressive than Obama's predecessor, George W. Bush.

"I never made a commitment that somehow we were going to give carte blanche to large-scale producers and operators of marijuana ? and the reason is, because it's against federal law," Obama told "Rolling Stone" in an interview earlier this year.

It "is a murky area," Obama told the magazine, "where you have large-scale, commercial operations that may supply medical marijuana users, but in some cases may also be supplying recreational users. In that situation, we put the Justice Department in a very difficult place if we're telling them, 'This is supposed to be against the law, but we want you to turn the other way.' That's not something we're going to do."

Obama and the Office of National Drug Control Policy say the negative impacts of widespread marijuana legalization loom large.

Legalization would lower the price of "weed," thereby fueling its use and triggering more widespread negative health effects and subsequent costs of care, the administration says in its official policy position. Officials also say legalization would do little to curb drug violence or eliminate cartels.

"When you're talking about drug kingpins, folks involved in violence, people who are peddling hard drugs to our kids and our neighborhoods that are devastated, there is no doubt we need to go after those folks hard," said Obama.

"It makes sense for us to look at how we can make sure that our kids are discouraged from using drugs and engaging in substance abuse generally," he said. "There's more work we can do on the public health side and the treatment side."

More of Barbara Walters' exclusive first joint, post-election interview with President Obama and first lady Michelle Obama airs tonight on "20/20" at 10 p.m. ET on ABC stations.

Colorado and Washington are the first states to legalize recreational use of marijuana, presenting a fresh challenge for the Obama Justice Department to navigate in a second term.

While public opinion has shifted toward legalization over the past few years, Americans remain divided about the personal use of pot.

Fifty percent of American adults oppose legalizing the possession of small amounts of marijuana for personal use, while 48 percent would support such a measure, according to a November ABC News/Washington Post poll. The survey has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.5 points.

Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper, a Democrat who personally opposed legalization, on Monday formally approved the voter-backed amendment to the state constitution legalizing recreational use of marijuana.

The measure will allow individuals to possess one ounce of pot and up to six marijuana plants and licensed stores to sell marijuana starting next year.

Washington State last week officially became the first to allow recreational use of marijuana when a voter-approved ballot measure took effect.

In both states, pot use remains illegal in public. Eighteen states have approved the use of marijuana for medicinal use with a doctor's order. Federal law still prohibits all use and sale of marijuana.

ABC News' Jason Ryan contributed to this report.

Self Improvement: Self esteem - Harlan Morse21's blog

The term self-esteem can be defined as the level to which individuals view their worthiness as an individual. The roots of self-esteem are that, the appraisal is first developed from childhood and continues throughout someone?s life. If it one has low self-worthiness. If anyone has low self-worth, then it means that these earlier experience is simply overshadowed the individual and have come to represent the total sum who believe the individual is. Apart from being the basic features of mental health, positive self-esteem also is a protective factor which assists in attaining better health as well as good social behaviors in its duty as a buffer against the effects of negative impacts. This factor actively promotes health functioning as indicated in life concepts like achievements, being satisfied on top of possessing the capability of copping with disease like cancer. There are various ways through which self esteem get determined by work. This easy critically argues the determinants of our self-esteem.

Added pressure leads to rudeness. It has been shown that, added pressure contributes to a genuine rise in aggression and rudeness in workplace. Rudeness on its side makes individuals feel much devalued. It has be found by psychologists that rudeness is the behavioral fallout of the wide spread losses of loyalty of employers to the workers. While the reverse is also true. This is accompanied by drastic changing market circumstances. In addition, many young employees that have not been trained in social and communication skills usually challenge the authority in an inappropriate manner, and assume an entitlement unattainable against the demands for high productivity, (McGrath par 5).

Our Self-esteem can be determined by the approval and support particularly from workmates. The attachment as well as the unconditional workmate support is much crucial during self-development stage. Because, this is a reciprocal process, being people with positive self-esteem can assist internalize better the positive of significant others.? For example, in their prospective research, (Garber and Flynn, 62), discovered that, the development of negative self-esteem, is as a result of factors like low workmate acceptance, a history of workplace depression, as well as much exposure to negative interpersonal contexts, for instance, negative practices from bosses, having negative feedbacks from others one?s competence, on top of workmate discord and disruption.. As a matter of fact then, it is so much significant that workmate try to support their fellows to develop confidence in themselves.

Another determinant of our self-esteem is discrepancies amongst the competing concepts of the self, like between the idealism and the realty, particularly in the domains of significant. If the discrepancies between the values at work are too large, a person ends up assigning to particular competence field, as well as the perceived self-competencies that particular area, ends up lowering the feelings of self esteem. In addition to that, the existence of discrepancies between self as seen by oneself, and the self that is observed by significant others, that is surface esteem. It has been implied that, this could refer to differences that might end up existing between self-perceived competences and the absence of approval or support by those at work.

Self-esteem could be as a result of cognitive inferential processes. This could be seen as a determinant of both negative and positive feelings of self-worthiness.? This is so particularly when people observe and ends up evaluating their own behaviors in competencies in some specified domains, or the self-efficacy. When their evaluation is much poor, their competencies, particularly in comparison to those of there fellow workmate or weighted to the standards of significant others, as they ends up having more negative self-esteem. This kind of self-monitoring process can ends up being negatively or positively biased by a learned tendency to either positive or negative thinking.

By the middle childhood and adolescence, peers are another determinant of our self esteem. Peers in most circumstances have taken up the vital role in determining our level of self-esteem. There are a times also when schools picks up a vital role in the determination of their students? self esteem via the attitudes they do foster through competitions, and efforts, their achievement recognition ?in sports, academics the arts, as well as their acceptance of any kid as an individual who is much unique.

On the other hand, there exist negative impacts if there is overindulgence in empty complaints. In most cases, such like an issue might result to side effects on the self esteem. Praising as well as acknowledgement, ought to be genuine and legitimate, so that they might be much effective. On the same note, workmates can also become much influential. Research has shown that employees spent much of their time with their workmates as compared to the time spent dealing with other activities like even watching televisions.? On top of all these, the amount of time employees spent interacting with their family members is reduced greatly. Employees are faced with many issues that are related to conformity on top of wormate pressure. This group is pulled between the desires of being seen as a person with values that are much unique, and the desires of belonging to a group that they feel accepted and much secure.

Competence and mastery at work are the factors that determine our self esteem. It has been emphasized that, self esteem develop in people via mastery and competence, that usually emanate tackling and triumphing over challenges at work, even the ones who happen to being the modest. ?It is believed that, parents have the ability of boosting self esteem in infancy by giving them a role that is much active and autonomous in a casual play. As toddlers and infancy develop to an advance stage to self care practices, for instance beginning to feed themselves, parents are then encouraged to let their kids complete their tasks by themselves. No matter how they have done it imperfectly, parents need to avoid jumping in and providing necessary help. For instance, it is suggested that, by allowing one to pick up small pieces of food at the age of lets say 8 month even if on the way, some are dropped, and letting them hold their bottles on their own at the age of 12 month. It has been argued that, children in modern developing countries have an active role in the economic life of the community. They do assist their families by participating in some of the family jobs that are in most circumstances are done by adults. As a result, they tent to have higher chances of mastering tasks as compared to there counterparts in urban areas or developed countries, (Michal, 72).

In many ways, our self esteem is determined by job security compounding the frailty of self esteem. Nowadays, workplace is no longer an arena under which individuals count on fortifying their senses of self. In its place, it has turned to a source of stresses and depression. Workplace stresses in one way or the other determines our self esteem. These individuals that we usually work with subjects as to several stress factors like feeling of inadequacy, dissatisfaction, as well as fear of being branded as being a non-performer. All of these sated issues have a direct connection to the individuals? state of mind. Those work connected problems also faces similar dilemma of much low self esteem and self worth. Issues like retirements, diminishing both mental and physical faculties, sickness as well as loosening of family ties is much responsible for those who are engaged to work for longer times hence feel lonely as well as much isolated.

On the other hand, to build the mood of such individuals, laughter yoga is the fastest as well as the simplest way of improving self worth, self esteem as well as self confidence. It contains the authority of changing the state of the mood almost instantaneously and result to the generation of positive emotions. It has been shown that, the release of endorphins during laughter produces a factor of feel good. It also changes their way of looking at things. It also develops relations and family like bonding that uplifts their spirits, confidence regeneration, which all leads to positive self esteem.

In conclusion, every body has a picture of what his strength and weaknesses are. This mental picture is created through experiences starting at birth. Self esteem has been considered by many as being the most significant element of emotional health. Throughout the argument in the essay, it has been shown that, the speed at which the demand of work is moving at, is so fast that no one anywhere stops to acknowledge excellent performances. The productivity demand is growing so significant that no person feels that enough is being done, every person is just looking at undone workload and feel that nothing is being done. People are working in a manner that they encroaches their downtime hence no time for family as well as friends. In summary, our self esteem is determined by the behavior of individuals in the society especially at work, how people relate to their workmate, workplace stresses, and the performance of youngsters in school.

Risk-Taking Teens and Apps: A Bad Combination? ? iKeepSafe

Do you remember as a teenager how you tested limits? Maybe it was driving too fast, skipping school, or?. now I?m showing my age? streaking?

I remember when the whole school lined up to watch a couple of classmates run from one end of the campus to the other. ?Everyone knew it was going to happen, and of course the principals did too. ?So why would someone decide to run naked across campus?oh yeah, with ski masks to hide their identity, which of course everyone knew? ?The simple answer is that they wanted to show off and get attention.

We all have basic needs like wanting to belong, be recognized and feel loved. And these needs are powerful.

When kids and teens are confronted with a risky situation, they will weigh the risks and rewards, and sometimes the reward is more important than doing the right thing.

You can meet some of these needs for your children by being loving and involved parents, but they are definitely seeking to also meet these needs from their friends and peers. ?How they meet these basics needs can involve a variety of methods, but technology allows risk-taking at a very different level than when I was a teen.

There are so many apps (smart phone software) that are great tools for sharing and communicating, but they also afford risk-takers to use them quite differently than intended.

Some apps, such as ?Wickr? allow users to send text messages that delete after a short period of time, keeping parents from seeing the text. Some apps, such as ?SnapChat? allow senders to set the amount of time the recipient can view a photo before it is automatically deleted.

I?m afraid kids are going to see these apps as a way to do something risky because they believe whatever they do will be erased. ?Because that attention-getting photo will be immediately deleted after being seen, teens may think it is safe. That false sense of security is dangerous; there are still ways to save that image or even take a picture of it with a different phone.

The use of apps on smart phones is a topic parents need to discuss with their children. ?Take time to discuss rules and expectations about installing and using apps on their phones. ? There are thousands of apps that can be used for great things, but some may have a variety of uses that a risk-taking teen will find intriguing.

Oh, now back to the ending to the streaking story. ?The administrators were a bit over-matched by the young men?s quickness and they made it safely across the campus that day. ?They had their 15 minutes of fame but eventually had to deal with the consequences of that run.

In today?s world there would be hundreds of pictures and videos of the whole event posted on Facebook and YouTube. ?In my high school days no one carried a camera in their pocket, so that day is just held in our fading memories.
