Protesters greet running mate Ryan on Vegas strip

LAS VEGAS (AP) ? Hundreds of protesters greeted Republican vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan outside Las Vegas' Venetian hotel as the Wisconsin congressman prepared for a private meeting with Republican mega-donor Sheldon Adelson.

Labor unions organized the protest Tuesday night. Workers chanted "Ryan, go home" and waved signs warning that the Republican presidential ticket is the "road to ruin."

Ryan was inside the hotel for what the Mitt Romney campaign described as a "finance meeting." The campaign barred reporters from attending the event.

Democrats are attacking Ryan's proposals to reshape Medicare and cut trillions from federal programs.

The Republican congressman spoke at a Las Vegas rally earlier in the day, criticizing President Barack Obama's leadership. He didn't mention his plans to overhaul Medicare.

Chef Cleanse: Michael White Is Devoted to His Juices, Derailed by ...

After a long, hot summer of tacos and food trucks, we're feeling a little overfed and at least somewhat intrigued by all these popular, if pricey, cleanse programs. So, who better to test the cleanse's effectiveness than chefs, known for their insane lifestyles and unhealthy habits? We asked a few of our favorites if they'd be up for the challenge. Some declined (Andrew Carmellini: "At a reduced caloric rate, wouldn't your body start to break down muscle? I need muscle to crush heads.") but others were willing, even eager, to give it a try. Today, we'll be bringing you three cleanse diets from three seriously pedigreed chefs. Do they cheat? Will they actually forgo food? Can liquid kale conquer all? First up: Michael White, who, for reasons far beyond the Juice Press's "Drink Your Salad," had quite a raw week.

Day One
So, I know everyone is thinking, Michael White ? the fat guy, juice cleanse? Yup ? I enjoy a good challenge. I don't eat fusili with bone marrow and octopus for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, but my body welcomes a short hiatus from all things delicious, and I've already lost fifteen pounds from watching what I eat, so here goes! I'll try not to cheat but it's a big week ...

The Juice Press sent me eight juices per day ? that's a daunting amount of juice, but okay. Liquid salads, sweet-potato-pie juice, gazpacho, spicy grapefruit, cayenne lemonade ... this is what I'll be living on for three days. But first, I have a breakfast meeting at Balthazar. Who orders nothing at Baltzhazar? Just fresh fruit and orange juice, but I know that's cheating-light.

They tell you to drink a lot of water on top of the eight juices, so with all the liquid, I didn't find myself hungry. However, since I was on the move from restaurant to restaurant, by 5 p.m., I was ready for a nap. Soon enough, I was in bed at 11:15 p.m. with a coconut water nightcap. I watched some Olympics and slept until 8:30 a.m. ? two hours later than usual! That definitely had to do with the cleanse. Insomniacs should try it.

Day Two
I slept like a rock. Again. Woke up and grabbed a juice from the fridge ? it was out of the prescribed order. Whatever. I just take what I'm in the mood for. The sweet-potato-pie juice is REALLY sweet, but it doesn't taste bad. I drink a couple sips of each juice at a time. I can't chug a whole one ? too sweet, too spicy, too medicinal, but overall, I do like it. These things are $11 each. I don't know how they do it. Maybe I should look into getting in the juice business next.

Between my solid sleep and the sweet-potato juice, I was really feeling it. I can do this ...

Then I got the Pete Wells memo ... New York Times Nicoletta review. Cleanse, as we know it, over. I will now, immediately, be tasting a lot of pizza post-Cheshes/Wells/Sutton reviews. Went home, put my feet up, ignored Eater commentary and tried to stay positive with a coconut juice nightcap. Most chefs would have probably hit the Jameson.

Day Three
Today feels fine, better. I have tried a good amount of juice because my staff "juices," and I do think Juice Press are the best in the business (and no, no one is paying me to say that). Usually when I drink something spicy, I get serious acid reflux, but the D juice ? the spicy grapefruit lemonade with cayenne ? is wild. I didn't need a Zantac after, and it makes me feel totally alive.

I haven't been perfect, but I feel very alert with the minimal food and maximum juices. I would consider juicing once or twice a week; I have no cravings for soda or salty potato chips, which is rare. I love the gazpacho juice at night time. But to be honest, I topped it with ricotta salata shavings and some extra virgin olive oil ? and ate some whole-wheat crackers on the side. But, hey, I'm a big guy. I need a little more sustenance than just juice. Come on!

With that said, I wrapped up my last day feeling pretty great. Slept later than usual all three days, had much more energy, vibrancy, in the morning. I didn't really lose weight. I guess I cheated ... more than once, and that's why, but it was worth a challenge and was a nice distraction during an otherwise rocky week.

I still gotta live, not to mention my life is conducive to being around copious amounts of delicious-smelling Italian food 24/7. Nothing can get in the way of that!

New Barclays chairman: I'll review entire business

LONDON (AP) ? The new chairman of Barclays Bank says he'll undertake a top-to-bottom review of the embattled business, telling a British newspaper that he isn't wedded to any of his predecessor's policies.

Asked if he was committed to the current business plan of Barclays, which is reeling from a massive rate-fixing scandal, David Walker told The Sunday Telegraph that he wasn't "committed to anything except getting it right."

Walker said he wanted to review the company's business plan, but didn't want to sound "threatening."

Walker is due to replace Marcus Agius, who offered his resignation last month following the imposition of a $453 million fine for manipulating the critical London interbank offered rate, or LIBOR, which is used to calculate borrowing costs for hundreds of trillions of dollars in loans and investments such as bonds, auto loans and derivatives.

The scandal has damaged the bank's reputation and led to a slew of resignations ? most publically that of former Chief Executive Bob Diamond. Regulators are still weighing whether to bring criminal charges against those involved.

Market-watchers had speculated that the scandal would prompt Barclays to pare back its investment banking arm, Barclays Capital. But Walker, who takes over from Agius on Nov. 1, seemed cool to the idea, telling the Telegraph he wanted to remain a "universal bank."

But Walker did seem to suggest changes in the way the retail end of the bank works, saying "in principle" he was in favor of charging customers for bank accounts.

Most British banks offer users free standard checking accounts, but Walker said that created an incentive for banks to find more creative ? and riskier ? ways to extract money from customers. British banks have become embroiled in a series of scandals over interest rate swaps for small businesses and mis-selling payment protection insurance to consumers.

Such were "the consequence of not charging for bank accounts," said Walker. "Because banks are not charging, it drives them inexorably into this sort of position."

Author and professor Clayton Christensen played on the Oxford University basketball team when it made it to the British equivalent of the NCAA tournament?s final four.

It was a magical time for Christensen and his teammates until he found out that the championship game would be played on a Sunday.

?I had made a personal commitment to God at age 16 that I would never play ball on Sunday,? explains Christensen.

The coach, upon hearing the news, was shocked, as were his teammates. Christensen was no bench-warmer; he was the starting center.

?Can?t you break the rules just this one time?? the coach pleaded.

The truth is, he could have. He could have played just one Sunday, then gone back to keeping the promise he?d made.

But for Christensen, who is a deeply religious man, the commitment could not be broken. After thinking carefully about it, he told the team his decision.

Resisting the temptation turned out to be a pivotal moment, he now says. Why? ?My life has been an unending stream of extenuating circumstances,? he says. ?Had I crossed the line that one time, I would have done it over and over in the years that followed.?

Lesson: If you stick to your ethics 10 out of 10 times, you won?t regret where you end up. The challenge is in defining for yourself where you stand, and drawing a clear line.

With $1M In New Funding, Video Platform MediaCore Refocuses On Education, Hires Former Apple Education Exec Alan Greenberg

MediaCore, a company which launched a year ago with the mission of allowing any business to roll out its own private YouTube, is refocusing its efforts on the education market, and has raised an additional $1 million in funding to achieve those goals. The funding, which comes from private angel investors in the U.S. and U.K. including?Alex Khein and?Pierre Andurand,?brings the startup?s total raise to $1.5 million, but it?s not the only news MediaCore has today.

The company has also acquired a video encoding platform called Pandastream, has partnered with SchoolTube, and has hired Alan Greenberg, Apple?s former Head of Higher Education in Europe and Asia, as its Director of Education.

MediaCore initially wanted to help businesses provide a platform for video in the enterprise, and started with a focus on the SMB market. It saw some adoption by businesses who signed up to help train their staff using the product, but it also saw growing adoption in universities and K-12 schools. Reacting to the way customers were using its product, the company decided to shift its focus to target the very specific needs of those involved in educational efforts ? whether in businesses or in schools.

?One of the things we realized in the six months of playing in that SMB space,? says CEO Stuart Bowness, ?is that there are a lot of companies playing in that space. And a lot of big companies, too?.so what we started really challenging ourselves on, is ?how do we?differentiate??? Reacting to some pressure from customers, including the University of London, the team realized that it was the education market, in specific, that could use more innovation.

?Out of all the things we?re working on now, the most important thing we could possibly be working on, is solving how video works in education,? says Bowness. With MediaCore, the company wants to simply the entire process of ?doing so, including capturing the video, managing the video, storing the video, and then delivering the video to students in a protected environment.

Bowness notes that one of the issues with video in education is that many schools block YouTube, which is where a lot of today?s educational content is found. ?YouTube is blocked in about 80% of U.S. K-12 institutions, and it?s blocked in a lot of corporations too?it isn?t perceived as a safe place to send kids to learn,? he says. ?or ?employees as they can get distracted.? So on MediaCore, teachers can privately share video with students, other teachers, or parents, as need be. In addition to commenting, they also have access to view real-time analytics around those videos.

Now the company has signed up video-sharing site?SchoolTube as a customer, which takes the MediaCore user base to 5.5 million students per month, and has notably attracted some key talent with hiring of Alan Greenberg. Part of his role will be to set up the new Educator-in-Residence program, which will help teachers and professors better understand how they can use video as a teaching tool in the classroom.

As for the acquisition of encoding platform?Pandastream, MediaCore is not talking about the terms of the deal, only noting that it was profitable at the time, and the team of four has joined the company. Pandastream is still up-and-running as a separate product for now.

The company tells us that its burn rate is low, so it will focus on building more educational features into its product throughout this year, but will likely start raising again somewhere around November or January.
