News and Society Blog-Economics: A New Dream - Mcdonald ...

I saw this sign at Zucotti Park when I visited the encampment a couple of weeks ago. I guess it's gone now, getting warm with the person who made it, waiting for another time to give the message.

Mayor Bloomberg gave all the protesters a break from the coming winter by moving them. I don't know if it's true but it seems to me that the level of protests has risen. I loved the image in Berkely, CA of the tents suspended by helium balloons - yea to the college students for being their creative selves and letting the ideas flow.

It's my dream that we have this revolution peacefully and we commit to the opportunity to turn this economic disaster into fortune for us all. Taking responsibility for ourselves is a good idea. Having the freedom to make choices is great as long as we have the knowledge and foresight that greatness requires.

To become or follow our dreams requires a discipline of the soul this culture hardly touches upon. We are schooled by multiple choice, hardly having a chance to find our own expression.

At this moment in our history we are less likely to have a discussion with someone who doesn't agree with us. We can choose what news comes to us, what songs we hear. What we miss is the vast area of unexplored consciousness where we might feel a little out of place, a little foolish, we might not know our way around. We've lost touch with the magic of the resilient edge of our resistance.

When you have feelings bottled up do you take yourself out for a walk, a scream, an art? Do you drink a stimulant, a depressant, blame someone? Expression is one of the most important keys to health. Lack of it might be the single most important root of disease.

How can we move forward to our goals and dreams, how can we change what we lovingly call "the system?" What we are fighting now was not created with love, and it was probably done in committee or in cadres. (Think banks & investment firms, not Che Guevara)

The only way out is the way in. Each one of us in our own way can shape ourselves for the dream we have. We have only to be like Bloody Mary's song in South Pacific, "You got to have a dream, if you don't have a dream, how you gonna have a dream come true?"

Ever since she can remember, Pam has invented mysteries, created systems to dwell in them and painted the magic she sees, although she calls it "reality." Detailed drawings, abstract vistas and layers of pigment lend themselves to her vision and invention. If you long for adventure, want to know where to go next, what to do next, find your path, check these sites.

Bulgaria could suspend vote on trade agreement

(AP) ? Bulgaria could join Germany, the Czech Republic and Poland in delaying its decision on whether to sign an international copyright treaty that some Internet users say could lead to online censorship.

Bulgarian Economy Minister Traicho Traikov said Tuesday he will ask his government to suspend ratification of the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement on Wednesday until the EU has dealt with opposition to it.

Last weekend, protests were held against the treaty in Bulgaria, Poland, Germany, Finland and other EU nations.

It aims to harmonize international standards on protecting the rights of those who produce music, movies, pharmaceuticals, fashion, and other products that often fall victim to piracy and intellectual property theft.

Navigating Valentine Wine with Sasha! | The Naptime Chef

I love drinking good wine, but personally find it daunting to select a good wine on my own. In fact, I usually find myself chatting up the sommelier or wine store owner to find something I think I might like before I make a commitment to buying anything. Today I am invited my friend Sasha of Spin the Bottle NY to share her tips for buying wine. Specifically, I wanted her to share suggestions for buying wine at restaurants and getting the most of out a bottle for Valentine?s Day. After all, I firmly believe us parents deserve a great bottle of wine and if we are going to splurge, let?s do it right!

1) Navigating a wine list can be a minefield ? what are your tips for picking out delicious, budget-friendly wines at a restaurant where the wine list is several pages long?

It doesn?t have to be a minefield. I always check out a restaurant?s wine list online before I visit. Pick out a few wines in your price range and spend a few minutes researching them. It?s a worthwhile investment of your time. Better to spend the evening gazing into the eyes of your loved one that staring at a wine list, no?

Tell the sommelier what you?re looking for, and don?t shy away from establishing a price range. Tell her you want something under $40 ? or if you feel awkward saying a dollar amount out loud, point to a wine in your price range on the list and tell her you want something for around that price. Mention some wines you know you like (or ones you don?t) to give her a sense of your taste.

Word to the wise: asking for a ?dry? wine is virtually meaningless. Almost every wine on the list will be made in a ?dry? style. If by ?dry? you mean mouth-drying and a little bitter, like oversteeped tea, then you really mean ?tannic.? (Wines made from Cabernet Sauvignon, for example, can be quite tannic.) And if you mean zesty and mouth-puckering, like a glass of tart lemonade, then you mean ?acidic.? (Sauvignon Blanc is the quintessential example here.) Being precise with these terms will help you get what you want.

Finally, look beyond the tried-and-true (Bordeaux, Burgundy, Champagne, Napa) for the best values. Southern France and Spain are two regions I always look to, as well as off-the-beaten track regions in California. And this is just me, but I rarely order Pinot Noir-based wines when I?m out at a restaurant. It?s very tough to get this grape right. Inexpensive Pinots aren?t much to write home about?and good Pinots at a restaurant mark-up can be seriously pricey.

2) A lot of us parents celebrate Valentine?s Day at home after the kids are in bed! How do you recommend picking out a couple great bottles of wine at the local shop to go with your meal, without breaking the bank?

The most important thing is to develop a great relationship with the staff at your local wine store. Be a repeat customer ? and give them plenty of feedback on the wines you do and don?t like (and why).

Also, choose your price range and stick to it. Don?t be intimidated into spending more; these days there are delicious wines at every price.

I wouldn?t stress too much about finding the ?perfect? wine for what you?re serving, but if you do want some matching guidance from the wine store staff, be specific. How you?re preparing something (grilled vs. fried, for example) and what you?re pairing with (sauces, side dishes) can have a big impact on what to pair it with.

3) Some of us (i.e Me) often get lured in by pretty packaging. What should someone look for on a wine label when shopping for wine?

Some wine labels are incredibly detailed ? others much less so. It might depend on the type of wine, where it?s from?and the predilections of the winery?s marketing department!

One wine label line item that?s mandatory: alcohol content. Most wines are in the 12-15% range. (Setting aside fortified wines such as port, sherry and the like.) This is one drinker?s opinion, but once you get north of 13.5-14%, you?re talking about wine that packs a serious kick! Everyone?s taste is different, but a lot of wine cognoscenti criticize these very alcoholic wines, as alcohol tends to blunt other flavors. If you?re talking about a romantic dinner for two where you anticipate splitting a bottle of wine, you would want to look for wines with more moderate alcohol levels.

And please, have no shame about choosing a wine for its label! One wine region that gets a lot of love (no pun intended) for its labels around Valentine?s Day is Saint-Amour. These are medium-bodied wines from the Saint-Amour region in Beaujolais. They?re really food-friendly, delicious, and versatile wines ? often with amorous themes on their labels!

4) What is your favorite menu (including wine!) for a romantic Valentine?s Day meal?

Usually we opt for meals that have a special meaning. A few years ago, my husband and I made b?stilla because we had eaten in during our vacation in Bandol, in southern France. We served it with a wine from the region. It wasn?t a ?perfect? match ? but it made sense to us and reminded us of our amazing trip.

5) Very important question: Wine & Chocolate. Best pairing ever? I think so. Why does it work so well and how do you pick the best wines to go with rich desserts?

Sacrilege perhaps, but I?m not a fan. Any wine that?s intense enough to stand up to chocolate is a wine I?d prefer to savor on its own. That being said, two classic chocolate partners are port and Banyuls ? that?s a rich, sweet, fortified wine from? France?s Roussillon region. Also, I don?t think chocolate and champagne work well together. Champagne fresh, lively character clashes with the rich, unctuousness of chocolate.

6) I have a weakness for bubbly wines. How do you recommend incorporating them into a romantic meal?

As much as possible! Sparkling wine is great with any number of foods. You can start off with a lighter style, like a Blanc de Blanc champagne, that marries particularly well with salty or fried food. (It?s also great with sushi.) Try a fuller sparkling wine for your main course ? think pink with Roederer Estate Brut Ros? from California or Avinyo Rosado Cava from Spain. There are even sparkling reds ? Australia makes sparkling Shiraz, and there are some terrific Italian Lambruscos these days. Again, I don?t love sparkling and chocolate together, but if you have a fruit dessert planned, Moscato d?Asti can be a delicious accompaniment.

7) What are one or two wines you think are worth the splurge this Valentine?s Day?

Valentine?s Day is a great opportunity to drink a wine with some age on it. What better way to toast your enduring love? (Awww?) Try something you have stashed away that you?ve been meaning to open, or else a bottle from your local wine shop. (You?ll want to hit a store that specializes in wine, not just your local liquor store, to make sure they have a good selection and good storage for older bottles.)

As for me, I have a 1998 Hermitage (a Syrah-based wine from France?s Northern Rh?ne region) that?s begging to be opened.

Scalado Remove clears up your photos, we go hands-on (video)

Scalado Remove clears up your photos, we go hands-on (video)
It's a familiar scenario. You're traveling with a friend and she poses in front of a famous monument. You're ready to take her picture with your phone but there's a constant stream of people and vehicles getting in and out of your shot. What are your options? You could wait for the right lull in traffic to press the shutter key or you could use Remove -- Scalado's patented new object removal technology. Remove captures several images in a row, analyses them and automatically creates a composite photo devoid of unwanted details. Better yet, it highlights potential objects and lets you eliminate them manually. The folks at Scalado -- best known for such camera innovations as zero shutter lag and Rewind -- are planning to showcase Remove at Mobile World Congress later this month but luckily for you, we got an exclusive first look at an early build of the Remove app for Android.

We installed the app (designed for Gingerbread) on two of Samsung's flagship devices -- our Galaxy Nexus HSPA+ and our global Galaxy S II. The primary UI is simple and looks pretty much like any other basic camera app. Just tap the on-screen shutter key and Remove quickly takes several pictures in a row (the Nexus is about twice as fast as the GS2 here, interestingly). You can touch a second time to stop capture or let the app finish on its own. Remove then magically displays the resulting composite shot which you can save to the gallery by tapping the checkbox at the top right corner of the screen. There's also a toggle in the same location which lets you switch to a secondary UI that allows you to pick which unwanted details to remove (or keep) from each frame. Of course you can load and re-tweak previous captures at any time to restore (or eliminate) objects after the fact.

Remove introduces a completely new way to capture special moments, and while we experienced occasional issues with the responsiveness of the UI and noticed a couple minors bugs, the app is relatively intuitive and works rather well for a prototype. Take a look at our gallery of sample images and screenshots below and hit the break for the full PR treatment, including Scalado's concept video.

In Maine, Paul vies to extend Romney losing streak (AP)

SANFORD, Maine ? Mitt Romney hoped to avoid a fourth straight election setback Saturday in the GOP presidential nomination race, but feisty Ron Paul could extend that losing streak with a victory in Maine's caucuses.

Romney, the one-time front-runner, stepped up efforts to court Republicans in recent days, reflecting growing concern about the outcome of what has become a two-man race in Maine.

Neither Newt Gingrich nor Rick Santorum, who won in Missouri, Minnesota and Colorado on Tuesday, is actively competing in Maine, where party officials planned to declare a winner Saturday evening.

Paul was optimistic as he greeted morning caucus-goers in Sanford, where a few hundred Republicans gathered in a nearly-filled high school gymnasium.

"I think we have a very good chance," Paul said. Romney will "be better off if he wins it and I'm going to be a lot better off if I win. So this will give me momentum and it will just maintain his. It's a pretty important state as far as I'm concerned."

Romney wants Maine voters to help in his struggle to convince his party's conservative wing that he should be the candidate they back. The former Massachusetts governor said in a Washington speech Friday that he was "a severely conservative Republican governor."

He echoed that message in Sanford minutes after Paul left, and later in the day at a crowded Portland caucus.

"In my home with my mom and dad I learned conservative values," Romney said. "I want to ask you and the people of Maine for your vote. If I get your vote, it'll help me become our nominee. If I become our nominee, I'm going to beat this guy and bring America back."

Paul, a libertarian-minded Texas congressman, is fighting to prove he's capable of winning at all, particularly in a state where his campaign has focused considerable attention. He has scored a few top three finishes in other early voting states, but his strategy is based on winning some of the smaller caucus contests where his passionate base of support can have an oversized impact.

Paul suggested his candidacy was at a critical juncture. Asked whether he would stay in the contest until the GOP's national convention in August, he answered: "I'm going to stay in as long as I'm in the race. And right now I'm in the race."

There is no reliable polling to gauge the state of the Maine election, which drew fewer than 5,500 voters from across the state four years ago. But Romney's recent activities suggest a victory is by no means assured, despite the natural advantages of being a former New England governor competing in a state he won with more than 50 percent of the vote four years ago.

He changed his schedule Friday night to add personal appearances at two caucuses Saturday; he had planned to take the day off.

Romney faced a rowdy crowd at a town hall-style meeting in Portland Friday night, where one heckler was removed by police. Others asked pointed questions about his off-shore bank accounts, feelings about the nation's poor, and his continued support for the natural gas extraction process known as fracking.

On Saturday morning, he suggested that he's the only one in the race who isn't a Washington insider.

"I have never spent a day in Washington working," Romney said. "I expect to go there, get it fixed, and then go home. I'm not going to stay in Washington."

Some crowd members chanted, "Ron Paul," as Romney left the crowded gymnasium.

Maine's nonbinding presidential straw poll, which began Feb. 4, has drawn virtually none of the hype surrounding recent elections in Florida and Nevada, where candidates poured millions of dollars into television and radio advertising.

Romney and his allies spent a combined $15.9 million in Florida. But his campaign had placed only a small cable television ad buy airing Friday and Saturday, at a cost of several thousand dollars. But he sent surrogates to the state in recent days and hosted a telephone town hall in addition to Friday's campaign stop.

Maine's caucuses are spread over a week.

The state party will announce a winner Saturday evening, although a few contests will be held Sunday. Washington County, in the state's far eastern region, postponed its caucuses until Feb. 18 because of a snow storm, disappointing some participants.

Helen Saccone, who's from Lubec, said she understands that weather could create problems, but that those who wanted to caucus should have had the chance. "It's Maine. Life goes on when it snows in Maine," she said.

The rural region is likely stronger territory for Paul, who has been more active than Romney in the state.

Paul did reasonably well in Maine four years ago, earning more than 18 percent of the vote, and his support has grown since then in a state whose electorate isn't afraid to support candidates outside the mainstream.

The tea party, hardly a Romney ally, has exerted significant influence, taking over the GOP platform and helping to elect Gov. Paul LePage.

"Paul needs to show he can win somewhere," GOP strategist Phil Musser said. "My sense is a win in Maine for Romney would be nice. But to be honest, Ron Paul is camped out up there and he needs to win one."

The timing of the contest also raises the stakes.

The narrative coming out of Maine will likely reverberate in the political echo chamber for weeks, given there isn't another election until Arizona and Michigan host their contests Feb. 28. Romney hopes that narrative will be more positive than it has been over the last week, arguably his worst of the year.

Future of Long-Distance Love Is Cool But Creepy (LiveScience.com)

It's 2025 and your boyfriend has been temporarily posted to Tokyo, while you're still stuck in the?Boston-Atlanta Metropolitan Axis. How will you keep in touch? Well, maybe hug shirts and larger-than-life videoconferencing will help you out.

As communication technology has improved over time, it's helped long-distance couples stay in real-time contact and enjoy conversations almost as if they were sitting face to face. There aren't good studies on whether more people maintain long-distance romantic relationships now than in the past, said Linda Young, a relationship counselor and board member of the Council on Contemporary Families, a nonpartisan, nonprofit group that aims to educate the public about family and relationship science. Young's anecdotal experience, however, is that there are more separated lovers now. "The impression I get is that yes, it's true," she told InnovationNewsDaily.

The possible increase in the number of far-flung lovers isn't just a result of better tech, she said, but also of the poor economy in the U.S. "Because of job opportunities or lack of opportunities, people are going where they have to go," she explained.

For now, these people will have to rely on phone calls, email and video calls, but in the future, they can look forward to technologies that will involve one or two more of the five senses or even?virtual worlds?of their own.

INFOGRAPHIC: High Tech Love in Space and Time

Big brother lover

Television screens have been growing bigger and sharper since the 1990s. Now, with the?Apple iTV, they're getting more connected, too. Even mobile devices can have fairly large displays, such as those on tablets. "It's going to be seamless to have a really large view of your spouse and the room they're sitting in," Young said. She has noticed many long-distance couples understandably prefer video chat programs such as FaceTime and Skype over telephone or email, so the future's big-screen views may be popular with traveling and long-distance partners.

Call in a hug

Even the largest video displays are still missing one physical sense that is very important to love: touch. Both sexual and non-sexual physical touch help couples bond, not least by releasing a?social chemical called oxytocin?in the brain, Young said.?

In 2006,?Time magazine called?the Bluetooth-enabled "hug shirt" one of the best inventions of the year. The shirt is embedded with devices that can sense and recreate the strength, warmth and heartbeat of someone's embrace. If hugger and huggee both wear the shirts, which are linked to their cellphones, they can send touches to one another's torsos and arms, to any location their phones could normally make calls. If one party doesn't own a hug shirt, he or she can still send a hug using software called HugMe.

Six years later, the shirt is still listed as "coming soon" on the?website of its inventors, CuteCircuit. Though other researchers have since created jackets with tactile feedback?for video games?and?movies, the shared-touch shirt idea seems to have stalled for now.

"When it comes to something like putting on a suit that has sensors so your entire body can be activated by a remote person at a keyboard," Young said, "the number of people who are desiring that kind of touch experience is pretty low."?

She doesn't see a big market for touch clothing, except for "depersonalized" experiences such as paid webcam sex. It seems too strange coming from a beloved partner, she said. "Touch is really important, but second-degree touch is very different from first-degree touch."

Yet webcams and phones give people second-degree sights and sounds. Why is touch different? Phones and photographs have existed for a long time, Young said, so people are familiar with the sensations.?

Perhaps with time, people will get used to touch technology as well.

In their own little world

Most of the long-distance couples Young works with keep in touch by phone or with video calls, but there is a "subset of the population," she said, who use avatars in virtual-world games such as Second Life to keep things "spicy." In akin technology, some online services, such as?OmniDate?and?VirtualDateSpace, let users create avatars and go on virtual dates.

For those who aren't interested in avatar worlds, there are websites (IceBreak,?Between) that have quizzes, games, messaging and photo-sharing just for two. Young recommends them for long-distance couples who prefer doing things together over sitting and talking.

She has seen these games work well with long-distance lovers, but she's also run into couples in which one partner enjoys the new game much more than the other. In that sense, it's just like joining the local bowling league together or picking up community gardening as a pair. "Like anything else, like some new hobby, you have to do something that fits both dispositions," Young said.

With better video screens, improving tactile technology and more online activities and games, separated couples in the future can keep in close touch.?There's no app to reproduce the dirty details of day-to-day living, however?snoring, nose-picking, arguments both petty and important. Couples who plan eventually to live together should keep that in mind, Young said. "You can maintain an idealized version of yourself through your technology." Long-distance relationships can have "that bubble quality, that shinier-than-real-life quality."

All communication technologies engage the imagination in some way, to fill in the inevitable gap with real life. People should expect a potentially rough adjustment period when they get back together again, Young said. "Now all the truths are coming out."
