I love dips and spreads so is it any wonder that I regularly feature them on ThingsThatWeDo.com? I?ve also learned along the way that not all dips and spreads are created equal. Some sound promising and turn out to be complete let downs. Others, surprise me and wow me. Well, allow me to introduce you to Sunflower Kitchen and their Jerusalem Hummus. I?ve never had it before but it caught my eye during a recent holiday trip. I like eating donairs and shwarmas so I?m kind of hoping this will add some vibrant kick to my morning breakfast routine, especially while I?m taking a much needed break. Who knows?

Product Review: What are the ingredients in the Sunflower Kitchen Jerusalem Hummus?

Call me silly but this would be the first time that I had ever heard of Sunflower Kitchen. Then again, how often do I travel? (Don?t ask, I hate packing and anything remotely related to packing).

Take a look at the list of ingredients for this Sunflower Kitchen Jerusalem Hummus: chick peas, tahini (sesame paste), filtered water, sunflower oil, garlic, parsley, herbs, citric acid, sea salt, spices. I have no idea what the ?herbs? and ?spices? are but I?m confident that the list is a good one since I did a little online research on the Sunflower Kitchen website and learned that their products are made with natural ingredients, are free of preservatives, are transfat free, non GMO (thank goodness) and contain no artificial flavours or additives. For those interested, their products are also vegetarian or vegan and dairy free.

Product review: how does the Sunflower Kitchen Jerusalem Hummus taste?

For the record, my kid is not a big fan of the dips and spreads that I test out for ThingsThatWeDo.com. Often times, she claims she can?t stand how they smell. Yet, she tolerates them nonetheless and who knows, maybe one day, she?ll be asking to try out a dip or two.

On this occasion, my kid reacts the exact same way she does to all the dips I test. She plugs her nose and carries on with her breakfast. Mommy on the other hand, can?t wait to taste this Sunflower Kitchen Jerusalem Hummus. I crack it open and it looks just like you would expect hummus to look (obviously) so it really now comes down to flavour.

I spread some of the Sunflower Kitchen Jerusalem Hummus on to my slice of rye bread and dig in. YUM O! Unlike other classic hummus dips which to me, taste a little flat, this Sunflower Kitchen Jerusalem Hummus has a definite vibrant kick to it. It?s got the flavour profile of regular hummus but it?s seriously jazzed up from the parsley and herbs. The Sunflower Kitchen Jerusalem Hummus is tart and tangy yet filling and satisfying. The Sunflower Kitchen Jerusalem Hummus spreads evenly, it?s the perfect consistency and isn?t too watery or too thick. This was one very happy breakfast indeed!

Verdict:

Yep, if you can get your hands on this Sunflower Kitchen Jerusalem Hummus, it?s definitely worth a buy. Now, just because I eat my dips at breakfast, it doesn?t mean you have to. By all means, the Sunflower Kitchen Jerusalem Hummus would taste equally good on your party table dipped into some toasted pita chips or crunchy bread sticks.

The best part is, the price of the Sunflower Kitchen Jerusalem Hummus is comparable to all the other dips that are out there on the market. So, I have to then wonder why Sunflower Kitchen is able to make this Jerusalem Hummus taste so fresh and vibrant while hummus dips from other brands seem so lacklustre? Hmmm?.I feel my feet itching to go back to the fridge for some more Sunflower Kitchen Jerusalem Hummus!

Accessible Public Skating At Massachusetts State Rinks!

The Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) has officially announced the start of public ice skating November 23 at 42 rinks around the Commonwealth. DCR's Universal Access Program maintains adaptive ice skating equipment at 20 of these rinks.

Towns with state rinks that feature adaptive ice skating sleds are?Auburn, Boston, Brighton, Brockton, Cambridge, Franklin, Greenfield, Holyoke, Hyde Park, Jamaica Plain, Medford, Newburyport, North Adams, Plymouth, Revere, Somerville, Springfield, Taunton and West Roxbury.

Ice sleds offer a seated option for skaters who cannot use their legs or who have balance issues too difficult for conventional skating. Those who can use their upper bodies evenly can use two shortened hockey sticks with a figure skating pick on the opposite ends of the blades for self propulsion. A stroller bar handle can be inserted into the back of the ice sled to push sled skaters who cannot self propel or steer. Anti-tippers prevent people from tipping over backwards and an adjustable leg tray allows kids and adults to use most sleds. This equipment offers more inclusion of people with disabilities into the rink experience. Whole families can skate together!

Click here for a reference list of where ice sleds are located in the Massachusetts State rink network. Most rinks have two sleds, two sets of sticks, and one stroller handle. Some rinks (Brockton, Holyoke, Revere, Springfield, West Roxbury, Worcester) have more sleds and handles, and some rinks (Cambridge, Hyde Park) only have kid-sized sleds. (Kids fit well into adult-sized sleds but not usually the other way around!) Call the rinks directly (using phone numbers listed on the link above) or DCR's Universal Access Program at 413-545-5758 for more specific information.

New York's Governor Cuomo blasts utilities for Sandy outages

Riverhead, NEW YORK (Reuters) - Damage from Superstorm Sandy to the electricity system in the U.S. Northeast exposed deep flaws in the structure and regulation of power utilities that will require a complete redesign, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo said on Thursday.

But at least some members of one utility oversight panel later fired back, saying it was the governor who should take responsibility.

"We're going to have to look at a ground-up redesign," Cuomo said while criticizing the utilities he called virtual monopolies run by nameless and faceless bureaucrats.

"The utility system we have was designed for a different time and for a different place," Cuomo told a news conference. "It is a 1950s system. ... They have failed the consumers. The management has failed the consumers."

Sandy, which hit the U.S. East Coast 10 days ago on October 29, had knocked out power to almost 2.1 million New York customers. The nor'easter, meanwhile, left more than 150,000 additional New Yorkers without service and in the cold on Wednesday.

More than 285,000 homes and businesses in New York remain without power after Sandy and the nor'easter.

The power companies in New York are units of Consolidated Edison Inc, the state-owned Long Island Power Authority (LIPA), the state-owned New York Power Authority (NYPA), National Grid PLC, CH Energy Group Inc and Iberdrola SA.

Officials at the utilities were not immediately available for comment.

"I believe the system is archaic and obsolete in many ways. They are basically one of the last monopolies. ...," Cuomo said on Thursday. "If you are unhappy with the utility company, who do you fire? Who runs it? Who owns it? Where do you get them?"

At a separate meeting in Suffolk County on Thursday, some members of a panel set up by the legislature to oversee LIPA took the governor to task for not previously having taken a more active role in the state-run utility.

"The governor needs to take responsibility," said Matthew Cordaro, co-chair of the Suffolk County Legislature's LIPA Oversight Committee.

"He has not appointed the CEO for two years," Cordaro said, adding that "LIPA reports directly to the governor, so he can fire the chairman at will."

CUOMO THREATENS OPERATING LICENSES

Last week, Cuomo sent a letter to the CEOs of the utilities that operate in New York, saying he would take action against those utilities and their management if they do not meet their obligations to New Yorkers in this time of crisis.

For those utilities found to be unprepared for Sandy, Cuomo threatened in the letter to order the Public Service Commission, the state's utility regulator, to commence proceedings to revoke the companies' certificates of public convenience and necessity, which allow them to operate investor-owned power systems.

"New Yorkers should not suffer because electric utilities did not reasonably prepare for this eventuality," Cuomo said.

Sandy hit LIPA harder than any other power company, knocking out more than 1 million of LIPA's 1.1 million customers, and the nor'easter knocked out 123,000 more customers - several of which had their power restored after Sandy.

Combined, Sandy and the nor'easter knocked out more homes and businesses on Long Island than LIPA has customers.

"Part of this is the system. But with LIPA, I also believe part of it is the management, which has been unacceptable. They failed. They have failed the consumers. It is that simple," Cuomo said Thursday.

The governor echoed rumors of power equipment supply shortages that were denied by LIPA and Con Edison on Wednesday.

"We have the material ... the poles, wires and transformers ... we need. There are no material shortages," LIPA Chief Operating Officer Michael Hervey said on Wednesday.

Hervey said "the governor is a very tough task master and we are doing everything we can to get all power back." He also denied what he said were rumors that repair crews were sometimes idle.

RESIDENTS VENT FRUSTRATION

In Hampton Bays on Long Island's eastern end, longtime residents Ann and Pete Zullo said they lost power twice since the storm, in addition to seeing about $150,000 worth of flooding damage in their home. They say they are now used to losing power at least once a year, if not two or three times.

"We lost half our house, we can't live in our house, we can't do anything, a lot of the furniture's gone, everything's gone," said Pete Zullo, 78. "We want to retire here and enjoy our life, the rest of our life and we can't now."

At the LIPA oversight committee meeting on Thursday, homeowners vented frustration about not knowing whom to speak with at LIPA to get help.

"I'm out of power, and I've got no help," said Patrick Casas, 43, a UPS truck driver from Brentwood, Long Island, who has been out of power since Monday night. "There is no communications, their buildings are closed, there is no one to speak to."

Supreme Court to take on major voting rights case

Only three days after the contentious 2012 election, the Supreme Court announced today that it would take up a major voting rights case; it will be heard in the next few months and decided by June.

At issue is Section 5 of the Voting Rights Act, which was passed in 1965. It's a central provision of the law that requires states with a history of voter discrimination, mostly in the South, to clear any changes to their election laws with federal officials in Washington.

The Supreme Court's decision today comes just after a long and bitter election during which Democrats accused Republicans of voter supression tactics and Republicans feared voter fraud. "After the biggest push to restrict voting in decades, the battle over voting rights is now moving to the Supreme Court with a major case, which could determine the future of a critical provision of the federal voting law that guarantees equal voting rights," said Wendy Weiser, director of the democracy program at the Brennan Center for Justice. a liberal-leaning think tank/advocacy group at New York University.

Several covered states argue that while Section 5 "served a noble purpose," Congress was wrong in 2006 to extend it for 25 more years. They argue that things have changed in the South and the coverage formula of Section 5 is based on data that is more than 35 years old.

The case the Court agreed to hear is called Shelby County v. Holder. Shelby County is in Alabama.

Attorney General Eric Holder has defended Section 5 and called it a "key stone" of the historic law. Chief Justice John Roberts, in a 2009 opinion in a related case, wrote that some of the justices had "serious misgivings" about its constitutionality.

Section 5 affects Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, South Carolina, Texas, Virginia and portions of seven other states.

Elon Musk Explains Why SpaceX Doesn't Patent ... - Business Insider

The patent system has been getting a lot of heat lately, especially with the high-profile fight between Apple and Samsung.

Superhero entrepreneur Elon Musk just avoids patents altogether with his high-tech space venture SpaceX.?

You would think you'd want to protect your intellectual property when you're building complicated things like spaceships and innovating new technologies daily.

But Musk's decision actually makes total sense.?Why is that? Musk explains in a recent interview with Chris Anderson at Wired:

"We have essentially no patents in SpaceX. Our primary long-term competition is in China," said Musk in the interview. "If we published patents, it would be farcical, because the Chinese would just use them as a recipe book."

There are plenty of big holes in patent law ? especially international patent law. And in some cases, they're totally bypassed anyway.

Thus, Musk's only option is to go with the trade secret route. That should end up working for a company like SpaceX, but as patent fights ramp up, something has to be done.
