Jamie Dupree's Washington Insider: Ryan accepts VP bid, skewers Democrats

From Tampa, Florida -?

To the resounding cheers of Republican delegates gathered in Tampa, Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI) thrilled GOP delegates as he accepted his party's nomination, urging Americans to again vote for change in the White House to help improve the nation's economic fortunes.

"Why would the next four years be any different from the first four years?" Ryan asked to loud applause in Tampa, Florida.

It was by far the biggest speech of Ryan's political career, and he seemed more than ready for it, much to the delight of thousands of Republicans who hope victory is in their future this November.

"After four years of getting the run-around, America needs a turnaround, and the man for the job is Governor Mitt Romney," said Ryan.

Ryan repeatedly skewered the White House for trying to shift the blame on economic issues, accusing the Obama campaign of running a lowest common denominator bid for re-election.

"They?ve run out of ideas. Their moment came and went. Fear and division are all they?ve got left," said Ryan to more cheers.

One line that really had GOP partisans slapping their thighs in delight was where Ryan blasted the President over continuing economic problems, making the argument to young people that they should think about voting Republican in 2012.

"College graduates should not have to live out their 20s in their childhood bedrooms, staring up at fading Obama posters and wondering when they can move out and get going with life," Ryan said to cheers, as Twitter lit up with the hashtag of #FadingObamaPosters almost immediately.

Ryan started off by introducing his family to delegates - and more importantly - to the nation, and the kids didn't disappoint, drawing smiles as they waved to the assembled crowd.

At one point, Ryan even joked about the generational difference between himself and Romney, boiling it down to what was on their Ipods.

"I hope it?s not a deal-breaker Mitt, but my playlist starts with AC/DC, and ends with Zeppelin," Ryan said about what music he wanted to play at his campaign events.?

Now the stage is set for Mitt Romney. Will he deliver like his running mate?

Intercultural competence includes using idioms aptly

Getting it right can not only narrow the cultural divide, but actually help you to fit right in with your foreign associates

The other day I said to one of our lead trainers in cross-culture, ?Neil, why don?t you come over tomorrow and we can shoot the breeze on some of the thoughts we had on the project.? He replied, ?Sure, let?s chew the fat.?

These Americanisms leave me chuckling, but I also realise that as new managers, we are likely to come across idiomatic usage from so many different countries that we?re likely to be all at sea (read confused).

Idioms are used by all cultures. People of each background take these usages for granted, assume they?re universally understood, and often feel a mere literal translation will be enough to convey the same meaning to people of other backgrounds. But that?s not really so. Often, we end up getting the wrong end of the stick (which, of course, means misunderstanding what was meant) when our expat colleagues use idiomatic speech.

Piece of cake?

I?ve found myself in such a situation quite often. And often, I?ve had others telling me stories of how they?ve either misunderstood or been misunderstood. I?ve put together some of the common phrases in British and American English, as well as some popular usages from other countries, to give you a taste of how being on the same page isn?t a piece of cake! (Translate as: it isn?t easy for multiple people to understand the discussion the same way).

Let?s start with the things I misunderstood initially. Getting down to the wire ? when my American client said this about his project, I thought it was something to do with having a slim chance and made suitable sympathetic noises, but it turned out to mean getting close to the deadline.

?Six of one, half a dozen of the other,? my sister in San Francisco replied when I asked her which was harder to get ? admission in college or high school. What she meant was it?s the same. Same difference, as we say here in India

?Manian, tell me about this new office project team, I want the whole nine yards,? a client once said to me. I thought this expression had its origin in the sari, which was nine yards long, and set out to explain that it was commonly six yards these days. But the expression actually originated in their sport and meant ?I want all the details.?

On the other hand, if someone tells you, ?Let?s cut to the chase,? it means just the opposite, the same as ?What?s the bottom line?? meaning, give me what I need to know in a nutshell. Rambling on after they use this phrase means we don?t ?get it,? and the client is likely to find us tiresome.

Joe, a Canadian friend I was coaching in the intricacies of Indian etiquette, once threw up his hands and said to me with a groan, ?I can?t win for losing,? by which he meant that no matter what he did, he could never be right in the Indians? eyes!

Literally difficult

Again, you may think you know a language, but literal translation can leave you extremely confused.

An Indian fluent in English confessed he was puzzled by his expat boss, who repeatedly told his staff, ?We can?t wait till the cows come home.?

?What cows? Is he using this because it?s India?? he asked. He was as amused as I was after I explained that the boss was only telling his team to hurry up. Indianisms can be just as confusing. One worried team leader from Singapore, whom we were training, asked at our session, ?Why do Indians want to get intimate with me on e-mail?? We had to explain to her that when an Indian writes ?I wish to intimate you?? It only means ?I wish to inform you ??!

Sometimes, it may not be even a phrase, it could be a gesture, accompanied by one word. The Japanese and the Koreans use a similar mannerism ? they sort of flex their biceps and accompany it with a word roughly translated as ?fight? or ?fighting?. They don?t mean to pick a quarrel with you ? they?re telling you to ?Keep it up!?

Sure, knowing how to converse idiomatically with one?s colleagues, irrespective of nativity, is not as essential as communicating deadlines or project instructions; but it does add that extra layer to communication. It provides a foundation of cultural understanding that can prove invaluable to long-standing professional relationships.

Cultural foundation

Idioms and expressions like the ones I?ve told you about come from the fields of sport, lifestyles of yore or contemporary practices in specific ethnic cultures.

For instance, the French say ?a meal without cheese is like a lovely girl with one eye? ? fine dining and fancy cuisine are so important to France that many expressions have their roots in food. Understanding this makes it easy to appreciate that three-hour business meals are the norm in their culture too! And remember, if you understand your French guest to say that he?s trying to accommodate the sheep and the cabbage, he?s only telling you that he?s trying to please both sides in the business deal.

Then there are the polite euphemisms that different cultures use. Go sakinishitsureishimasu?I am sorry to be leaving before you ? is a very polite way of parting if you are leaving a party or event before the Japanese guest you met there. Je m?eclipse is a good show-off expression for France, which says the same thing, I am sorry I am leaving before you, I am going to eclipse my way out.

Familiarising yourself with such habits of speech may seem a trivial thing to focus on, but it goes a long way in cross-cultural relationship-building.

It lessens the ?them? and ?us? divide, and using appropriate idioms and expressions makes you feel like one of ?us?. So, make time for idioms. Use less of your own, and understand, then emulate other country-specific ones.

And Now a Word From Our Sponsors: Please Don't Pick Up Your iPhone!

Sure, your mobile phone is mobile. But you?re quite likely to be using it at home.

We?ve been seeing evidence that a whole lot of smartphone and tablet usage doesn?t happen on the go, and here?s yet another data point, via ad network Tremor Video.

This chart shows mobile ?ad calls,? which we can use as a rough proxy for mobile Web usage, for three different Tuesdays across June and July. You can see that it peaks in late afternoon, presumably as we?re making post-work or post-school plans, and then again during TV?s primetime.

Which again, syncs with what we?ve been hearing for a while. But if you take a closer look at the way people use their iPhones and Androids during primetime, the data gets even more interesting.

This breakout chart plots ad calls (the red line) against the times that TV ads are airing (the blue lines), and paints a telling picture: People put their phones down at the top of the hour, when new shows start. And as soon as ads come on, they pick up their gadgets again. (Click image to enlarge.)

And yes, Tremor?s takeaway here ? people are tuning out TV ads in favor of the Web ? is a self-serving one for a Web ad network to tout. But it certainly seems plausible.

Bad Data, Bad!: Skin cancer, sunscreen, and connecting the dots ...

There is skin cancer in my family. ?My grandfather has had it, and occasionally a doctor will try to tell me that I am genetically predisposed to it because of this. ?While I try to practice good sun habits, I am dubious about the "genetic predisposition" argument. ?You see, my grandfather spent several years in the early 40's hanging out in the sun in the Phillipines while monitoring Japanese aircraft activity. ?He thinks that's more responsible for his skin cancer than genes. ?I do too.

Regardless, you might say, it's a good idea to wear sunscreen right? ?Of course. ?Except it may not help.

As it turns out, sunscreen formulas that prevent sunburn may not be equally good at preventing cancer. ?And you may not be putting enough on. ?And they may have chemicals in them that actually increase your cancer risk rather than decrease it. ?Huh.

I've talked before about making sure you connect all the dots, not just proving disjointed ideas. ?We know that sunscreen prevents sunburn, and people who get sunburns are more likely to get skin cancer. ?The troubling part is that there is no proof that people who wear sunscreen get less skin cancer. ?It's tempting to jump from A to C, but you have to remember things can go wonky when you don't remember the stop at B.

Regardless of the data, sunburns are painful, and I'm still very Irish, so I would recommend sunscreen in general...but lets not oversell the good it might be doing.

Now I have a scar down the middle,
like the seam where a pressed tin toy,
a bird or a dog, comes together.
What intimacies, that the doctor
has seen my clockwork. Has had
his hands inside my softness.
Who?s after me this time?
Napoleon, Bismarck?
Patroklos, the lovely doomed.
I could lie here
in the fragrance of naphtha.

During my worst sickness
I was so lost and hungry
that I went out of myself
into the north hills and over the ice

and only a family of bears
had pity on me. They had taken off
their skins and hung them up
in the hallway, and without them
they looked just like men. Their children
looked just like our children.
For me they boiled meat,

though they ate it raw themselves.
What courtesy. When they were sending
me home they said, Don?t tell the other men
about us; we have children and they deserve
to grow up
. They lifted the dark medal
from over my heart. It?s better
to breathe deeply than to be praised.

Las Cumbres Observatory spectrographs acquire target robotically

Las Cumbres Observatory Global Telescope

Two identical FLOYDS spectrographs, installed in recent weeks at telescopes 6,000 miles apart, robotically acquired a supernovae target this week. Due to the level of precision required and the difficulty involved, few if any, other ground-based spectrographs have ever achieved this milestone.

"This is unprecedented," staff astronomer David Sand explained. "In a matter of just a few weeks, Las Cumbres Observatory was able to install the spectrographs, achieve first light, and begin robotic operations. It's unheard of." Sand is already gathering data from the spectrographs to support his research.

The FLOYDS spectrographs --- unique for their combination of design, capabilities, and level of automation --- were named after the band Pink Floyd, specifically for their album artwork on The Dark Side of the Moon, which shows a prism dispersing white light into the colors of the rainbow. Instead of sunlight, FLOYDS makes rainbows out of distant supernova explosions and gamma ray bursts to probe their chemical compositions and inner workings.

FLOYDS, installed on Faulkes Telescope North (FTN) at Haleakala Observatory and on Faulkes Telescope South (FTS) at Siding Spring Observatory, are some of the first spectrographs designed to acquire astronomical targets, observe them, and process the data without the aid of on-site astronomers. Observations that are currently rare, like studies of supernovae and gamma-ray bursts hours after their explosion, are expected to be made routine, since the telescopes can get on-target much more rapidly than they could if they were operated by people.

Robot Spectrographs

While robotic imaging telescopes are becoming increasingly common in astronomy, robotic spectrographs are rarely built for ground-based observatories. This is because the opening to a spectrograph is a narrow slit, and getting starlight to fall through the slit requires pointing the telescope to better than two-tenths of an arcsecond. This is a daunting proposition --- an arcsecond is equivalent to the width of a human hair as seen from 10 yards away.

Another unique feature of the spectrographs is their ability to observe the entire visible spectrum in a single exposure. "The FLOYDS spectrographs are sensitive to light over the entire range of visible colors," explained LCOGT Science Director, Tim Brown, "including some that cannot be seen by the human eye."

Most spectrographs require two exposures to see over such a wide range, but FLOYDS uses a clever trick to double the range it captures. Light entering the spectrograph strikes a diffraction grating, which splits the light out into a spectrum. But each diffraction angle is shared by two radiant frequencies. Most spectrographs, to achieve an unmuddied spectrum, filter out the higher or lower spectrum, leaving just half the range. FLOYDS adds a prism instead, simply offseting the location of the higher frequency spectrum to a different location on the digital camera, and capturing a much wider range of colors.

Las Cumbres Observatory Global Telescope (LCOGT) has owned and operated FTN and FTS since 2005. To date, observing on these telescopes has been limited to imaging without spectroscopic capabilities. A team from LCOGT including lead mechanical engineer Matt Dubberley, astronomer David Sand, telescope technicians Mark Elphick and Mark Willis completed the installation of the spectrographs during June and July.

Finding New Things

Sand, who worked closely on the development and testing of the spectrographs, and who managed the installations, said "FLOYDS is the next step in understanding the physics behind time varying astrophysical events. We will be able to identify supernovae earlier than ever before, perhaps gaining insight into their explosion mechanisms. FLOYDS also allows us to monitor objects for months on end, something that is very difficult to arrange with non-robotic telescopes. Coupling robotic spectrographs into our telescope network gives astronomers a huge edge."

When supernovae and gamma-ray bursts occur, astronomers may have only minutes or hours to capture the fast-evolving details, such as observing the actual supernova shock breaking out of a red giant star. Such events have been seen only a handful of times, but these observations are critical in linking the explosions to the progenitor star, which cannot otherwise be seen. Previously, shock breakouts were only seen when the astronomers got lucky. The right observer had to be at the right telescope, at the right time, when a supernova close enough was discovered early.

But robotic spectrographs like FLOYDS can be programmed to automatically observe targets from a sky survey, and interrupt other telescope observations to get them. And by having two spectrographs on opposite sides of the globe, chances are improved that one of them will be in the dark and ready to observe in the hours immediately following a supernova explosion.

"Any time you get a new capability in astronomy, you find new things," says Andy Howell, leader of the supernova group at Las Cumbres Observatory. "This is my dream spectrograph. There's a whole universe of stuff out there we've barely glimpsed because of technological limitations. Not any more!"

Credit Card Ratings And Credit Card Secrets | personal finance ...

A bad credit rating is sure to have negative consequences in a number of fields. For instance, you will be charged a higher interest rate when taking a loan since the institution giving you credit will always fear non-repayment. If you wish to take any insurance, your bad credit history will discourage the insurer and hence will charge you a higher premium amount to secure against any default payments. Also, if you wish to apply for a job in the financial industry, then there are high chances for the job to get disapproved if your credit score doesn?t meet the requirements of the job.

In a recent development that should please a number of people and businesses, Cybersource and NetSuite have finally decided to join hands and hence integrate their companies and specializations to help fight the ever rising online card frauds, especially for e-commerce organisations. NetSuite is known for its ordering and financial tracking services, while CyberSource is known to specialize in fraud management solutions. Hence a merger of these two companies should really benefit the customers and businesses as the two companies believe that if integrated into an organization?s network, their solutions can now screen orders against 200 common fraud detections.

MasterCard has recently expanded its operations in the global prepaid debit card market by acquiring the debit card management unit of Travelex. Travelex is commonly known to frequent travelers as it has been running successful currency conversion units in airports across the globe. Travelex came out with the concept of a stored value debit card to ease the consumer?s hassle of paying for exchange expenses during their trips abroad. Since these cards have started gathering quite a lot of interest from consumers, MasterCard has acquired the business and plans to build on this base and expand their reach through online and retail channels.

Find out about cards from IMB and NAB.

There are a number of so-called secrets that you could try to make your card more useful. One such secret is that it is in fact possible to negotiate your interests for certain cards. Your issuer will probably never tell you this, but it is something you could keep in mind and try it in the future. Hence it is advisable to contact your issuer and ask for the rate to be lowered. If your credit track record isn?t too good, and you have been late in paying off your balances in recent times, then unlikely the issuer will agree to negotiate, however it is always worth a try!

There are times when the due date for your balance payments is arriving and hence causing you a lot of stress. However, what a lot of consumers do not know is that you can ask your issuer for a different due date. Yes, you can actually request for this. For example, if your due date lies in the beginning of the month, but you get your salary only towards the latter part of the month, you could ask the issuer to move your due date to the 3rd or 4th week of the month. Issuers might not always agree to do so, but there surely have been instances when they have.

Lindsay Lohan Jewelry Thief Suspect?Again!

Say what? No seriously, police have officially named Lindsay Lohan as a suspect in yet another jewelry theft case. This one is even more bizarre than the first, which just proves that this chick has some serious issues. Sure, sure, you are innocent until proven guilty. But it isn’t just everyday that you end up involved in MORE THAN ONE jewelry theft case. Could she be a real clepto? I don’t know. Something stinks, and it isn’t the perfume she probably swiped from the department store. You may remember the case back a few years ago when she was allegedly caught on tape walking out of a jewelry store with some goods that she didn’t pay for. Even before that, others had accused her of simply trying to keep the jewels they had used for photo shoots. Guess what? She is currently on probation and could really be screwed if she is busted for anything like this. This particular case is even better. Now someone has actually contacted the police about a week ago saying that a person had stolen nearly $100,000 worth of watches and sunglasses. The guy’s name is Sam Magid, and he has been hanging with Lindsay [...]

Jeff Bullas interview - Business 2 Community

At Social Media Down Under I got the chance to interview Jeff Bullas, an AdAge Power 150 blogger and top Aussie social media professional.

Here?s our interiew:

Adam Franklin: Hi it?s Adam Franklin, from Social Media Down Under. I?m here with Jeff Bullas, thank you for joining us today Jeff.

Jeff Bullas: It?s a pleasure Adam.

Adam Franklin: I?m keen to share with our audience on our blog and YouTube channel, can you tell me about the rise of these image sharing tools such as Instagram, and Pinterest.

Jeff Bullas: The web has become much more visual over the last 12 months and you might have noticed with the change of design for Facebook, the new timeline, cover photo. Also Google plus launching has put certain pressure on Facebook to evolve its platform. So seeing those two platforms evolve to provide higher definition larger images. We are also seeing the rise of platforms such as Pinterest and Instagram that communicate messages in a much more visual way. Also the popularity of infographics. These are all driving or creating new opportunities in terms of how we communicate online.

Adam Franklin: So should taking these visual tools into account when playing with peoples content marketing programs these days?

Jeff Bullas: Absolutely, so for example about 2 weeks ago I wrote a blog post containing a infographic that I?d pinned on Pinterest, and in checking the figures recently it?s had over 300 pins. Tree River: An image in the bed...1 Samuel 19:16

Baby S is now a toddler, but she will always be the baby of the family. However, we've decided to dub her Goldilocks here on the blog...keep reading and you'll see why. Of course, she has changed the most since my last post. Next month she will be 23 months old. Today she weighs 24 pounds and is 31" tall.?

Here are a few words that I can think of off the top of my head that I know she can speak appropriately on her own: kitchen, hot dog, apple, orange, (ba)nana, grape, rice, corn, milk, cheese, butter, bread, jam, cookie, popsicle, done, yummy, water, shirt, pants, shoes, socks, table, chair, plate, spoon, car, boat, video, doll, baby, mommy, daddy, recognizable & appropriate names for all the siblings, hold me, please, yes, no, bed, light, (out)side, (in)side, help, stop, please, (thank) you, eat it, I don't know, sheep, pig, dog, cat, horse, deer, fox, bird, fish, cow, rabbit, hair, story, Bible, Jesus, Elijah, diaper, underwear, potty chair, poop, and yucky. I know there are probably a lot more, but basically, I think she is right on target for language development.?

In addition to repeating most words, she knows the basic body parts and will point them out when asked. She also knows the basic animal sounds from dogs and cows to lions. I never thought of making a list like this for the older kids, but with G's challenges, I realized that it is hard to remember when the older kids met the milestones, so I'm recording Baby S's here.?

Goldilocks started climbing out of her crib early in the morning on May 31. She used a rocking chair to climb back in later the same morning. That night she slept on her mattress on the floor. Since then, she sleeps pretty well in her own toddler bed, but when we can't find her, we check out all the other beds that Goldilocks might be trying out.?

Sometimes in the middle of the day she naps in M's bed. That pillow can make his bed too soft for Goldilocks.

Sometimes she climbs in bed with a sleeping S.? That lumpy kid can make the bed too hard.

But most of the time she can be found with a sleeping Sacagawea. She thinks Sacagawea's bed is just right.

As you may have noticed in the picture above with S, and more of the photo I posted a few days ago of S's arm...

Goldilocks got an owie on her arm two weeks ago today while we were eating supper.? The Man, who was sitting right beside her, got up to get something from the kitchen.? She stood up in her highchair and I told her to sit down.? Instead she attempted to climb out of her highchair.? Before I could get to her side, she rolled over the edge and hit the floor. [Just a note that she does have an adjustable highchair.? We've since adjusted it down to the floor, which she dislikes because she wants to see everyone while she's eating, but that's just too bad.? Better safe than have another spill!]? Over the next few minutes it was obvious that she had hurt her arm as she refused to use it, but it looked ok, as in no obvious breaks.? The Man decided to splint it with materials we had on hand and just watch and see how she did.? She did fabulous with her foam/cardboard/duct tape/ace bandage splint, and we kept it on her for a few days. Whenever it would slip off of her itty-bitty arm, she would bring it to me ask for "help" getting it back on.?

A few days later she had an x-ray to confirm she "just" had a greenstick fracture like S.? On that day, The Man made her a professional grade splint that expanded Goldilock's clothing options. We will keep it on for at least another few weeks, although she really seems to like it and she may want to keep it longer.? It hasn't slowed her down a bit.

Here is a picture of her new splint...G wanted to get in the picture too!

I was going to put a new, clean bandage on before church today, but I was feeling yucky so she and I stayed home. It did give us another day to work on some new toddler skills.? Yes, those are training pants that she is wearing.? She's done reasonably well and I hope she is "done" before our church backpack trip next month!

Most voice controlled technology solely responds to those few those that sound like machines! Since then, Parrot has return up with some stunning devices. together with a radio controlled whirlybird that may be controlled with AN iPhone or iPad.

Parrot?s new Asteroid, a replacement automotive stereo declared at CES 2011 is nearer to the company?s roots. The Asteroid has voice management for hands free calls via its speakers ANd an AM/FM radio. it?s conjointly a hub with three USB inputs in order that you?ll be able to connect in AN MP3 player, good phone, pill laptop or portable computer. One nice irony is that the Asteroid uses mechanical man as its software however is incredibly happy to attach to Apple devices just like the iPod.

An facultative 3G electronic device may be utilized in one in all the USB ports and therefore the unit ships with a GPS electronic device. The system is due for unleash in late 2011 however no worth has been given at the time of writing.

Will it succeed?

At first look, the Asteroid appears unneeded. Cars return furnished with stereos and there ar FM transmitters to attach phones and iPods terribly simply. GPS navigation devices are widespread and lots of have hands free decision capability once integrated with a wise phone. At constant time, 3 USB ports, the power to induce traffic updates and navigation, web radio and build hands free calls will definitely attractiveness. on behalf of me it covers all the necessary things i need in automotive. for a few individuals it would simply be an excessive amount of and unnecessarily complicated.

Bats threatened by climate change

Climate change threatens the future of a significant number of bat species.

Bats have already suffered due to changing temperatures, according to a study published in Mammal Review.

That change is "alarming" say the report's authors, but worse is expected as temperatures rise further.

The foraging and feeding, roosting, range sizes and reproduction of bats will all be affected, while extreme weather and disease will also impact many bat species, they say.

More than one in five mammal species are bats, which are considered ecologically and economically important, due to their ability to pollinate and disperse the seeds of a great many plants.

Mathieu Lundy, Hayley Sherwin and Ian Montgomery of Queens University, Belfast, UK reviewed the scientific literature for observed impacts that climate change has had on bat species.

They then looked to see how many of the bat species living across Europe and North America might be impacted by further temperature rises.

They found numerous examples of how bats will be affected.

For example, climate change is expected to impact the foraging ability of bats.

Firstly bats, particularly lactating females, may have to fly further to drink. Bats are more vulnerable to dehydration than other mammals of a similar size, especially in arid areas, as they lack specific adaptations to retain water and it evaporates at a high rate from the large surface area of their wings.

Aerial-hawking bats, which take insects on the wing, may also have to travel further to find food.

The researchers write that 38 of the 47 species of European and North American bat species investigated would be at risk from these factors.

Bats may also wake more quickly from hibernation or torpor, as temperatures increase. Free-living greater horseshoe bats spend less time in torpor, a form of sleep that helps animals conserve energy, when the outside temperature warms. Captive eastern red bats, and other species of wild tree-roosting bats do similar.

Eleven species that roost in caves or trees are at risk.

Bat reproduction is unlikely to be impacted, say the authors. It is an area that needs more study, they say, but warmer climates may even benefit females by allowing them to give birth and wean their young earlier, leaving more time for the mothers to store fat reserves in preparation.

Although bats can fly, and thus move greater distances than terrestrial mammals, rising temperatures may also severely impact the range size of many species.

In Australia, for example, grey-headed flying foxes now live in the Royal Botanic Gardens in Melbourne, despite historical records suggesting it was once too cold for them there.

For many bat species that already live at high latitudes and altitudes, however, climate change will leave them with nowhere to move to.

Extreme weather events triggered by climate change, such as a higher frequency of drought and heat waves, could also wipe out local bat populations: over 30,000 flying foxes, one the largest types of bat, died during 19 episodes of extreme temperature in Australia, the study's authors report.

Perhaps worst of all, these risk factors are not mutually exclusive, and may combine to affect species.

All the bat species examined by the researchers that are currently listed by the International Union for Conservation of Nature as "Near threatened", "Vulnerable" or "Endangered" will fare worse as a result of climate change, they say.

?

2.? Before removing the old lock or installing the new lock, insert the long door handle screw in the door.? Now it is safe to remove the two mounting screws located on the face of the lock.

?

3.? Failure to perform step #2 above allows gravity to cause the lock to fall down inside to the bottom of the door.? Not such a big deal if it?s the old lock being replaced, such as in my case, but you don?t want to drop your new replacement lock down there.? As far as I know, there is no easy way to retrieve it without removing the door.? Notice my new lock stays in place while I go grab the two mounting screws.
