Where are Facebook's friends? Stock slide deepens

(AP) ? Facebook's newly public stock is sliding further on its third trading day as investors reconsider how much the social network is worth.

The company's long-anticipated initial public offering of stock raised $16 billion, valuing the company at $104 billion ? more than Amazon.com Inc., at $98 billion.

But Facebook's stock has plunged after the IPO. It fell $1.09, or 3.2 percent, to $32.94 in late morning trading Tuesday, after dropping as low as $30.98 earlier in the day. The latest price is 13 percent below the IPO price of $38 and values the company at about $91 billion.

Google Inc., meanwhile, is worth nearly $200 billion.

The downward spiral has left some people sitting on big losses and others scratching their heads. After all, nothing fundamental has changed at Facebook in the days since the much-hyped company came to Nasdaq Stock Market with a ticker symbol of "FB." Facebook still has more than 900 million users, its 28-year-old founder Mark Zuckerberg controls the company, and it is still one of the few profitable Internet companies to go public.

Facebook's IPO ? like Netscape's in 1995 and Google's in 2004 ? was billed as a milestone moment. Netscape's offering ushered in the era of the Internet browser. The company's stock more than doubled in its first day of trading. Google's IPO heralded the age of search. It posted an 18 percent gain in its stock market debut. Facebook was supposed to offer proof that social media is a viable business and more than a passing fad.

But investors don't seem convinced. Facebook's stock closed Monday at $34.03, down 11 percent from Friday's closing price of $38.23. The investment banks that arranged Facebook's offering set a price of $38 on Thursday. Although many investors had hoped for a big first-day pop, Facebook's stock opened Friday at $42.05 and fluctuated between $45 and $38 throughout the day.

For a host reasons, Facebook's falling share price shouldn't have been a surprise.

? Its IPO occurred the same week that the markets posted their worse performance so far in 2012. The Standard & Poor's 500 index fell 4 percent.

? Meanwhile, Europe was trying to avert financial disaster.

? At the same time, the American public's love affair with the stock market continued to wane. People have yanked more than $400 billion from U.S. stock mutual funds since 2008.

? Banks are being cautious, too. All this is happening in the backdrop where banks are under pressure from regulators to become more conservative after the financial crisis. "Regulators want banks to take less risk," said Larry Tabb, founder and CEO of Tabb Group, a markets research firm. "To support a $100 billion offering can be challenging in this environment."

? Investors were also spooked by the trading glitches at the Nasdaq on Friday. Some people weren't sure if their trades had been executed. Trading of the stock was delayed by a half-hour.

"It was like trying to get a jumbo jet to take off in turbulent weather," said Kathleen Shelton Smith, principal at Renaissance Capital, an IPO advisory firm. "It's going to be a bumpy ride."

With all of these factors in place on the day of Facebook's IPO, some people may wonder why Facebook's stock didn't do worse.

The answer: Facebook had some help. On Friday, Facebook only got as low as pennies above the offering price of $38 per share but never fell below. The banks that arranged the IPO, the deals underwriters such as Morgan Stanley and others, put in enough "buy" orders at $38 to keep the price from dropping below that level.

It's a customary gesture from underwriters to support the company they helped bring to market, explains Jay Ritter, a finance professor at the University of Florida. It's a way to save face and show that the company and the bankers gauged an appropriate level of demand from investors and valued the company correctly.

Pulling off a successful IPO means properly gauging supply and demand. The underwriters work with the company to decide how much stock to sell and at what price. Facebook sold 421 million shares. That was a lot of stock to sell. It is one of the largest IPOs on record.

Investors and the technology industry are closely tracking the Menlo Park, Calif.-based company's shares. In the same way that Netscape ushered in a new era for Internet darlings in 1995, Facebook may have done the opposite for similar companies waiting to go public today. There are 168 companies in the pipeline trying to raise $41 billion through IPOs in the U.S.

"Facebook has raised cost of capital for all the companies that come with an IPO in its wake," said Smith.

Facebook's falling share price may be a sign that investors are taking a rational look at the company's financial performance in comparison to its peers.

Though there are many ways to judge if a stock's price is too high or too low, one popular method is to compare it to earnings. The so-called price-earnings ratio, divides a company's stock price by the company's annual earnings per share. A higher ratio suggests a stock is expensive because, in a sense, it takes more years of earnings for investors to get back they paid for it. A lower ratio suggests it is cheap.

By this logic, Facebook looks expensive compared with some companies. It is trading at 74 times its earnings in the past year, according to FactSet, a research firm. That compares with Apple at 13.7 times and Google at 18.6 times. The Nasdaq index of technology stocks trades at 20.8 times.

"There must have been some sober second thoughts about this," said Brian Wieser, an analyst at Pivotal Research Group who was first to come out with a "Sell" rating on Facebook's stock on Friday.

It's not that he believes the world's largest online social network is a bad investment. But at $38 per share, it's just too expensive considering the risks associated with Facebook's brief history and unproven advertising model, he says. His fair price, or "target price," is $30.

Wedbush analyst Michael Pachter, who came out with an "Outperform" rating on Facebook before its IPO, said he believes the investment banks that arranged the offering overestimated demand for the company's stock.

Facebook originally set a price range of $28 to $35 for its IPO, which would have valued the company at $95 billion at the high end. Last Tuesday, though, it increased the price range to $34 to $38 per share, valuing the company at as much as $104 billion.

Then, responding to extraordinary demand from prospective investors, the company announced on Wednesday that it would add 84 million shares to the offering. The shares came entirely from the company's early investors ? such as Goldman Sachs and venture capitalist Peter Thiel. The fact that these investors were offloading more stock instead of hanging on to it may have served as a warning sign to new investors.

"The late addition of 84 million shares to the offering overwhelmed demand, limiting the first day price," Pachter said in a note to investors.

Aside from rational risk calculations, some investors "un-friended" Facebook for emotional reasons on Monday. Alper Aydinoglu, a student at DePaul University in Chicago sold all 50 shares that he got via E-Trade at $38 last week. He took an 11 percent loss.

"I'm not willing to stick through the volatility," Aydinoglu said.

PINK FLOYD Relics music review by the philosopher

4 stars This is not just a compilation. This is a good overview of the Syd Barrett period of Pink Floyd and include three songs (Arnold Layne, See Emily Play and Paintbox) which were never released on studio record before and delivers a studio version of "Careful with that Axe, Eugene" which was also never released before. Besides the "new" material this is a carefully mixed record which listens like a album with a good start en end structure. This compilation is actually better then the individual records who delivered the songs (Piper at the Gates of Dawn and More) and I doubt you have ever seen such a better quality cover for a "best of" record!

While I do like the early Pink Floyd sound I was never convinced of More. By having this compilation I should not have to waste money on that record. The Piper at the Gates of Dawn and The Saucerfull of Secrets are still recommended, because of their historical value and songs that miss on this record. There are actually no songs from the Saucerfull, so there ain't no overlap with that record.

The record contains short psychedelic rock songs and some examples of early psychedelic spacerock with a 60's sound, which I do really like. This early phase of Pink Floyd is very different then the Dark Side of the Moon period and for those who are into 60' psychedelia might prefer this particular side of Pink Floyd.

This is an essential compilation because of the reasons mentioned above. If it wasn't a compilation it would have been a masterpiece!

Tax and School Finance Reform ? Help ghd hair straightener or ...

Securing sufficient funding for the Dallas colleges is actually a ghd straighener challenge knowledgeable by many college districts within the United states of america. Most funding has come to be plan particular, with govt controlling its use and typically benefiting only a part in the Dallas schools students. State funding has been scarce, requiring Dallas schools to rely on local home and college taxes to address the general requirements from the schools. Moreover, federal federal government oversight generates a lot more administrative requirements. This means that a lot of of the precious dollars the Dallas colleges receive via government funding has to be invested on administrative fees, as an alternative to directly to advantage the students.

Recently, the Texas legislature passed new laws for tax and school finance reform. Numerous are touting the law as specially excellent for Dallas colleges. The legislation contains tax cuts to firms, home tax cuts, robust taxpayer protections, and school funding and accountability improvements.

Right here is how the brand new ghd hair straightener legislation affects the Dallas colleges.

College House Tax Manage. Beforehand, the Dallas schools, in addition to other schools in Texas, could elevate the college home tax price by six cents per $100 of house just about every year ? with out voter approval. Using the new laws, any elevate from the college house tax rate of additional than four cents need to have neighborhood voter approval. In addition, the optimum college home tax was $1.fifty per $100 of home. The brand new legislation will reduced that optimum to $1.00 per $100 of house over the subsequent two many years.

A lot more Accountability and Transparency. The brand new legislation not simply demands even more bureaucracy for that Dallas schools, but they?re needed to create it readily available online. The Dallas schools will now be needed to location in depth local college ghd australia investing information on an internet web-site for any individual to review. This new level of heavy oversight gives ammunition to anybody who needs to get their name within the paper through official criticism to the legislators or even bogus court action. Some question irrespective of whether this may well lead to far more expenses to the Dallas schools to defend required expenditures that benefit Dallas schools college students, either directly or indirectly.

Instructor Compensation. Over the upside, the new laws contains a $2,000 teacher spend increase, sorely necessary by Dallas schools lecturers. A $250 million state teacher performance pay plan can also be integrated within the regulation, of which Dallas colleges will obtain its portion. The performance program is always to inspire instructing innovation and excellence.

General, the brand new laws puts $1.7 billion dollars of new income into colleges across the condition, significantly ghd australia growing the state?s reveal of community school funding. Though this new legislation does choose a burden off the Dallas schools house taxpayers by supplying a lot more state funding for common school expenses, it does reduce the nearby dollars that don?t have the heavy value tag of red tape administration, at the same time as reducing the Dallas schools capability to lift money regionally.

Grail and Wand: Ebb and Flow: War On Sex or War On??

In the cover story for the Silicon Valley Metro (May 9), ?The War On Sex,? Palo Alto therapist Marty Klein suggests that both Right and Left are attacking sex as something dangerous and unhealthy.? Whether it?s restricting adult sexual expression or protecting children from supposedly harmful influences, many powerful forces conspire to suggest that sex is principally a threat?not a hope or a joy or a promise?to us all.?

Meanwhile, in the San Jose Mercury News (Sunday, May 13), a letter suggests that once ?the biological unit of reproduction is removed,? marriage becomes meaningless.? ?If two men or two women can marry, then who are we to deny marriage to three or more people who have a ?loving, caring, committed relationship???

Indeed, who are we to deny it?? If it is a ?loving, caring, committed relationship,? why should we deny it?

But, to the letter-writer, such a marriage would mean nothing.? One wonders?or at least I wonder:? If a loving, caring, committed relationship, of whatever configuration, is not holy, what kind of relationship is?

Contrary to what some people believe, we do not require loving, caring, committed relationships to spawn.? Spawning does not sanctify a relationship; love, care, and commitment do.

Liverpool fires manager Dalglish

By ROB HARRIS

AP Sports Writer

Associated Press Sports

updated 12:19 p.m. ET May 16, 2012

LONDON (AP) -Liverpool has fired Kenny Dalglish after the team's eighth-place finish in the Premier League, ending his second spell in charge.

Dalglish was brought to Anfield after a 20-year absence to replace Roy Hodgson in January 2011. Liverpool says his contract was terminated Wednesday by the club's American owners, Fenway Sports Group.

Ending the club's six-year trophy drought was not enough to save Dalglish, despite the League Cup triumph in February that secured Liverpool's return to Europe in the Europa League.

He also took the team to the FA Cup final, but fell short of the owner's target of finishing in the top four as Liverpool finished 17 points behind fourth-place Tottenham.

New Flooring: Things To Consider - Article Niche

article submission
New Flooring: Things To Consider

??Image may be subject to copyright.

Cost of Project: $$$$$

Location in the House: flooring

S o you decided that your home is in need of some new flooring. Perhaps it?s the flooring in one of your bathrooms or maybe even the flooring in the kitchen or living room. Regardless of where you believe new flooring is needed there are a multitude of things to consider and just as many decisions to make.
?
Like all other home improvement projects it?s a good idea to the very least consult with a professional contractor. Flooring contractors can advise you on what will work best in your home given the climate it resides in, the foot traffic it sees, and any potential abuse it might have to endure. A professional can also help homeowners rework their project so that it?s workable with their budget.

Not long after a contractor has been found and hired, homeowners will need to begin looking over the many different types of flooring available for their home. Some homeowners will have a specific type of flooring in mind even before hiring a contractor but will have to make some compromises after their initial consultation and realizing that, that type of flooring may not be suited for their home or for the environment that it resides in. Among the many different types of flooring for a home are tile, linoleum, carpet, hardwood flooring, and even marble.

Selecting flooring that not only complements your home but will be resistant to environmental hazards is the first key to success in such a project.

After flooring is then selected a contractor and his/her team can begin work on the actual project. Though there are some homeowners who prefer to tackle a project such as this themselves, the details and intricacies of such a project really necessitate the hiring of a contractor. A contractor will take precise measurements and will begin cutting and forming your new flooring at the very beginning of a project. After this portion of the project has concluded new flooring can be laid down and then set. You will need to keep in mind that different types of flooring will require different types of installation and different times for setting. A good example of this is tile. While installing and setting tile usually doesn?t take more than a day or so, it can?t be walked on for 1 to 2 days after that.

Furthermore a contractor will need to return and pour in grout once the tile cement has dried, rendering that floor inaccessible for another day or two.

Once your new flooring has been set it?s a good idea to carefully examine your new flooring for flaws or any other issues. This is a good idea because once a contractor finishes the project they may require you to sign some paperwork acknowledging that the job has been completed to your satisfaction. Finding flaws after signing paperwork means you?ll have to pay for that contractor, or another, to come back and fix the problem.

Once the project has been completed to your satisfaction and all paperwork is then signed you?ll be surprised at just how much more warm and welcoming your new flooring makes the room it resides in. So big is the change that it?s not uncommon for individuals who have new flooring put in to return to the same room for further remodeling. New flooring can pave the way for new furniture, new window decor, and even new paint. How far you take such a project is up to you.

Online business needs to do or hire someone to do search engine optimization for their business.? Search engine optimization (SEO) is a vital part of marketing for online businesses. Search engines use this optimization to rank web sites.? This means the higher the rank the farther up the search list a web site is.? It's a sustainable assumption that individuals using the search engine to find a particular product or service will only look through the first few pages of results.? This is where all online businesses want to be in order to drive potential customers to their site.? Part of the optimizing includes link building.? Link building can be a tedious task and is why most online businesses will acquire link building services.

Another good source to link to is a high profile site such as a local nonprofit or government site.? One may also build links with web directories.? There are pay directories, as well as, free ones.? A business must apply to the directory and wait on a response.? There is also back linking which includes keyword blogs and articles.? It's very important that the latter ones get plenty of attention and kept up to date.? As you can see this is a very in-depth technique and is why businesses elect to hire a link building service.

There are some things that a business needs to watch out for when hiring a link building service.? One is that they don't try to short cut by using "black hat" techniques.? This will also throw a flag up from the search engines.

There are plenty of link building services a business can choose from.? Because it's an important part of search engine optimization, which is equally important to your business one should make sure that the link building service is a reputable one.? A business may want to oversee the written material to check for clarity, grammar, and the proper use of keywords and their density.? This ensures that they didn't just throw money out the window.

If opting out to a link building service is something you prefer not to do, it's okay.? Businesses can do their own link building if they so choose.? There are a number of tips available online that can assist you in the steps it takes to create great link building.? You can also take courses for link building as well.

An American influx at Cannes' global glamour fest

CANNES, France (AP) ? Despite the mood in Europe, don't expect any austerity at the Cannes Film Festival, the annual Cote d'Azur extravaganza where glamour is wrapped in world cinema fervor and gauzy Mediterranean sunshine.

Except for the Oscars, it's the flashiest red carpet in the world, a ruby staircase flanked by tuxedoed photographers ? and a world away from financial turmoil.

Yet Cannes, the 65th edition of which starts Wednesday, fetes its directors as much as it does its stars. This year, there are plenty of both: esteemed international filmmakers like Abbas Kiarostami and Michael Haneke to big-name talent like Brad Pitt and Nicole Kidman.

Among the 22 films in competition, there's a particularly large American contingent, starting with the opening night film, Wes Anderson's "Moonrise Kingdom." The movie about adolescent love on the run brings a few new actors (Bruce Willis, Edward Norton) into Anderson's carefully orchestrated world.

Later, there's David Cronenberg's Don DeLillo adaptation "Cosmopolis," starring Robert Pattinson, and Walter Salles' ("The Motorcycle Diaries") anticipated adaptation of Jack Kerouac's beloved "On the Road." That film, produced by Francis Ford Coppola, stars Sam Riley and Garrett Hedlund, but has attracted more attention for its supporting roles, including Pattinson's "Twilight" co-star Kristen Stewart as Dean Moriarty's girlfriend.

There's also John Hillcoat's "Lawless," a Prohibition-era bootlegging tale starring Shia LaBeouf and Tom Hardy, and Andrew Dominick's "Killing Them Softly," a crime film starring Pitt as a Mob enforcer. The unusually large U.S. group is rounded out by Jeff Nichols' "Mud," with Matthew McConaughey and Reese Witherspoon, and Lee Daniels' "Precious" follow up, "The Paperboy," a death row drama starring McConaughey, Zac Efron and Kidman.

"The Americans are coming!" heralds Daniels, whose "Precious" screened in Cannes' Un Certain Regard section.

That echoes the same sentiment of Cannes' artistic director Thierry Fremaux, who declared America cinema "back in full force" when announcing the lineup.

For Daniels, the festival is a comfortable place to premiere his latest.

"We get so caught up, as Americans, in a specific type of film experience that we forget that this is a small fraction of what cinema is about," he says. "It's OK to be odd. I remember when I was doing 'Precious,' everybody looking at me and scratching their heads like, 'What are you doing, really?' I remember feeling that I was odd, and I don't feel odd at Cannes."

Terrence Malick's "Tree of Life" last won the festival's top prize, the Palme d'Or, the first American film to do so since Michael Moore's "Fahrenheit 9/11" in 2004. Although the French silent film ode "The Artist" was bested by "Tree of Life" at Cannes, it went on to win best picture at the Academy Awards.

"The Artist" had been picked up for U.S. distribution ahead of Cannes by Harvey Weinstein, whose Weinstein Co. will release "Lawless" and "Killing Them Softly" this fall. He's frequently used Cannes as a place to both acquire and launch films.

"Cannes is a worldwide arena," says Weinstein. "It's just a great opportunity to launch something. The worldwide press is there and it commands worldwide attention. You get such a difference of opinion, and when it comes together as a consensus, you can really launch a movie like we did 'The Artist' last year."

Several films in competition will be looking for distribution, and some have already found it. "On the Road" was last week acquired by IFC Films and Sundance Selects with plans for a release late this year. In deals signed in hotel rooms and aboard yachts, many other films in various stages of production will be bought and sold. After a robust market in 2011, Weinstein ? "a buyer and a seller" this year, he says ? describes this year's market as "maybe stronger."

Other films will seek to benefit from the global convergence of media, like the upcoming DreamWorks animation blockbuster "Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted," which will screen out of competition, and "The Dictator," for which Sacha Baron Cohen is expected to make an in-character promotional appearance on the waterfront Wednesday. The festival will also host a fundraiser for several Haiti charities, including Sean Penn's.

Whereas Penn and Pitt are familiar favorites at Cannes, this year's festival includes a new crop of young actors seeking more adventurous work, including LaBeouf, Efron and Pattinson.

"When you fantasize about how the world views you as an actor, you're like, 'I want to be recognized at Cannes,'" says Pattinson, who has drawn high compliments from his director, Cronenberg, for his performance in "Cosmopolis."

Pattinson has previously been to Cannes to promote the "Twilight" film "New Moon" in 2009, but he's clearly thrilled to be a part of the main slate.

"Hopefully, people don't hate it," he says, alluding to Cannes' famously vocal audiences.

Newcomers, though, are outnumbered by veterans this year. More than two-thirds of the directors with films in competition have previously had films at the festival.

There are no women directors in competition this year, after four last year ? an outcome that the feminist group La Barbe has condemned in an online petition.

Haneke, the Austrian director who won the Palme d'Or for "The White Ribbon" in 2009, returns with "Amour," about an octogenarian couple. The British filmmaker Ken Loach, winner of the Palme in 2006 for "The Wind That Shakes the Barley," is back with "The Angels' Share" ? atypically for Loach, a comedy. The Iranian master Kiarostami, whose "Taste of Cherry" won the Palme in 1997, has the Tokyo drama "Like Someone in Love."

That also leaves international heavyweights Jacques Audiard ("Rust and Bone"), Cristian Mungiu ("Beyond the Hills"), Matteo Garrone ("Reality"), Hong Sang-soo ("In Another Country," Carlos Reygadas ("Post Tenebras Lux") and the 89-year-old Alain Resnais ("You Haven't Seen Anything Yet").

Several of the American films are international collaborations, helmed by filmmakers from Brazil (Salles), New Zealand (Dominik) and Australia (Hillcoat).

At Cannes, the context is always macro: all the world, all of cinema.

"It's great to have an American genre film in that kind of arena, where what you're coming to do is just share storytelling and the love of filmmaking as opposed to national boundaries," says Hillcoat. "That's what's really exciting about Cannes."

Product reviews ? advantageous for individuals and businesses ...

Product reviews have been created in the attempt to facilitate online shoppers? search for the right product and to enable them to put their money to good use when making purchases on the Internet. Thus, by reading several Professional reviews of products that they are interested in, prospective customers can decide whether it is worth buying a specific product or not.

?

Professional reviews are aimed at presenting potential customers with an accurate and objective image of the product under review, so that they know exactly what they are buying. Unlike other kinds of reviews, Professional reviews present the product as it is, without hiding its flaws or insisting exclusively on its qualities and can be completely trusted, this being the main reason why online buyers have started to search for Professional reviews and to read as many Product reviews as possible before placing an order with an online retailer. In other words, customers look for objective and accurate descriptions of the products that have caught their attention prior to making a purchase on the Internet and will not let themselves deceived by reviews that describe solely the qualities and advantages of a product.

?

Although prospective customers are the target of Product reviews and all reviews are written with the customer in mind, research has shown that Professional reviews also benefit retailers, even if they also comprise some negative comments about a given product or service. In more concrete terms, Product reviews help businesses consolidate the position of their brand in this extremely competitive economic environment, increase traffic on their website, attract a growing number of visitors and, consequently, maximize their profits without any effort whatsoever on their part. At the same time, Product reviews are an excellent Internet marketing tool, and this form of free advertising presents numerous benefits for companies that decide to have their products reviewed. Hence, it is fair to say that Product reviews are advantageous for individuals and businesses alike and that online retailers do not have any solid reasons for worrying about the effect of Professional reviews on their sales.

?

Individuals who decide to shop online for a product that will cost more than a couple of dollars, such as a laptop, a perfume, a piece of furniture, a holiday package, etc. are strongly advised to read all the Product reviews that they come across on the Internet before placing an order. This way, they will learn important details about the product that they want to buy, they will be able to carefully analyze its properties and technical specifications, if any, and will know exactly what to expect the moment that the ordered product is delivered at their doorstep. All in all, it seems that more and more customers and companies begin to understand the importance of Professional reviews and this has determined companies that want objective and accurate reviews to hire independent reviewers for writing reviews for the products and services that they provide.

?

If you want to make a reservation at a restaurant, make an online appointment for a medical consultation, purchase a holiday package or a gift on the Internet, it would probably be a good idea for you to start by reading our comprehensive and objective Product reviews, for our Professional reviews will definitely help you make the right shopping decision!
